Traditional rule of thumb for nearfield monitor placement is roughly in an equalateral triangle configuration, with the two monitors and your head at each point of the triangle. So, the distance between the two monitors is about the same distance you should be sitting out from them.
+ The speakers "tweeter" "tremble" etc should be in the same height as your ears are. Recommended distance between nearfields and the listener is 1.5meter. Meaning the speakers should be 1.5 meter from each other ,facing at the listener to form a triangle as Har correctly said above. Another issue is you have to position them 1 meter away from the wall or at least 1/2 meter ...(the wall that is behind the speakers) to avoid generation of low freq that are not actually there.
Interesting article. Every 2nd studio photo you see on the net of "pro" studios place the monitors horizontal, which is considdered bad in that article (with a good reasoning behind it).
