Computer died and i might hang myself due to a new hardware ID invalidating Ilok Authorizations

before you launch into a blah blah blah about "that's why i always use dongles bro" i don't want to hear it. i hate dongles. they're dumb for my purposes.. period. save it for another thread. cheers
so, my macbook pro shit the bed. turned out it was the logic board. fortunately this repair was covered under the extended repair program for the model/make year of my laptop. It was a known issue and apple made good on fixing it well out of warranty or apple care coverage. kudos to them.
However, doing some triage now and finding all my plug ins that use iLok as software protection will not work and i need to reauthorize.. the problem is that i did a hardware authorization and all those are linked to the old/broken logic board.
so when i open the ilok license manager it shows my laptop greyed out and a new version of same laptop with 0 licenses available. so, there's 2 laptops of the same name. one is greyed out and has all the licenses linked to it. the other is accessible and has no license available for it. The license authorizer will not let me move the licenses to my the 'new' laptop location even though it's the same laptop.
i've started a support ticket with iLok and hopefully they have some contingency for this scenario that is similar to the "lost or damaged iLok" scenario. if not then you'll see some ilok plug ins for sale in the market place soon unless the developers want to graciously drop new licenses in my ilok account.. i doubt that scenario though.
i'll update this thread once i hear back from iLok support.
it's worth mentioning that i had to go through all the possible support ticket options to find one remotely close to my scenario as there really wasn't one. this leaves me nervous.

Exactly the same thing just happened to me with my MacMini - logic board dead (graphics chip at least) but they replaced it free of charge which was really cool of them. Hope you get it sorted, it was CR plugins I had the most problems with as they almost all relied on the motherboard (except the ones from NI and Arturia).dayjob wrote: so, my macbook pro shit the bed. turned out it was the logic board. fortunately this repair was covered under the extended repair program for the model/make year of my laptop. update:
So it's on the developers to get me sorted. They have to revoke the old licenses since they are "trapped" on the ID of the old logic board. They then reissue new licenses and i have to re-authorize them.
could be worse. thanks to soundtoys for getting the ball rolling quickly. heard back from them within minutes. No reply from iLok so far.

Is that the notorious MBP graphics chip problem? Been there and done that. I am on the third motherboard as the second one failed too - I think they are just sticking in resoldered refurbs as the third one definitely looks a bit tatty.
All devs helped out in the end and I got everything back. I only see one lost licence for DIgital Synsations now for which I couldn't be bothered to pester UVI over as three activations are permitted and I don't use it anyway.

Yeah ilok won't help with those licenses. It's always on the developers to fix it. Even with their zero downtime thing. That only provides you with temporary licenses until the developers get you sorted.
On a side note, evidently not using dongles is dumb for your purpose.

see bold text in first post. read it twice to comprehend it and realize it's not a discussion anyone wants to havemasterhiggins wrote:Yeah ilok won't help with those licenses. do not ask me about stolen dongle, broken dongle, lost dongle when traveling with laptop. thanks cheers ok bye.
what would've been ideal is to just be able to drag the licenses from one mac to another mac within the licenser auth. but perhaps that's too simple and easy to exploit by the many people living in the ethical grey area? idk. whatever. the licenses get "trapped" and are there now screaming "omg save me from this logic board"
edit: gotta say.. it's a strange loop between the devs and iLok. devs end up fixing iLok problems and providing support for a copy protection scheme that they pay to use... but it's probably less of a PITA than i imagine.

Well I still haven't learnt my lesson - iLok licences are still on the HDs.
I fall asleep with my MBP on my lap all the time, an (inherited) problem I have. It slides off my legs onto the sofa (or carpet, occasionally), and bends/snaps usb pen drives if inserted.
In reality soft iLok and used up C/R activations are not really very different. I would greatly prefer that devs used neither of course.

I had this scenario with a dead hard drive, mentioned it here casually that I lost my free Mello license and someone from UVI jumped into the thread and sorted out a replacement instantly. So, thumbs up for UVI.

I saw it. I just kept in mind that you don't own the forums and therefore have absolutely no control over what people say. that would be another great discussion that no one on an internet forum has had before and bored to death other people on the forum who had to wade through that dreck.masterhiggins wrote:I saw it. You mean like the many other discussions that consist of, "hey my computer died and and I could've prevented catastrophic loss but I didn't" posts? Yeah those are few and far between.
If you want people to stop posting argumentative statements on your posts, stop providing people with rich irony.

Didn't know there was a 'notorious' problem? Since my MacMini was affected the same way does it have the same graphics chip as the MBP? I would be surprised if it did tbh.lnikj wrote:Is that the notorious MBP graphics chip problem?

for the MBP yes.. 2011 models.. they actually expanded/extended the repair program. the apple repair site that has serial # look up is wrong. it told me i wasn't covered but the apple store guy said i was covered. glad i was because it was a $600 repair.
it's too bad i didn't know it was coming because i could've switched to ilok dongle based copy protection in anticipation. but so far i'm not able to see the future.
