Here is some help for those who have been having difficulties playing Natural Studio’s great FREE 200MB acoustic drum kit. If you haven’t done so already, you can get the kit as .wav files here:
http://www.natural-studio.co.uk/index2.htm
It’s also available as a soundfont (a VERY large one which requires lots of memory).
The .dr8 file available at Natural Studio isn’t loading for many people and the last time I checked, there was no fix (that I could find) according to the forum’s users.
Therefore, I’ve put together a little package to help anyone needing assistance to get the most out of this great free kit.
At my site you can download a .zip file named “NSKit7 Goodies.ZIP” located on the home page, bottom right.
This file contains:
1) .A dr8 file for DR-008 users (NSKit7all.dr8)
2) LM-4 file for LM-4, Linplug, (NSKit7 all.txt)
3) A VSampler 3 file (NSKit7 all.vs3)
4) A Sonar GM drum map which does the following:
a) Passes any GM Floor Tom (#41) to the NSKit7 Floor Tom at midi note #43
b) passes standard GM percussion (congas, cowbell, etc.) to your Midi out port (so your keyboard or drum machine, etc. can play those sounds)
5) A brief .pdf help file to assist you in loading the drum map if necessary
Notes, tips, etc….
1) To use the .dr8 file, store it in a folder directly above the folder containing the NSKit7 .wav files. For example - C:\ns_kit7freeWAV\ns_kit7freeWAV\samples
In this instance put ‘NSKit7 all.dr8’ in:
C:\ns_kit7freeWAV\ns_kit7freeWAV
This directory arrangement is how Natural Studio’s .zip is set up to extract. If you unzip it as intended, I’ve found that the .dr8 file can reside anywhere and will open the kit without even asking you for the location of the .wavs.
If you are prompted for the first sample when loading the kit, simply direct DR-008 to where the samples are located on your computer. A box will pop up labeled ‘LM-4 Import Options.” Use the browser in this window (‘Sample Path’) to locate the .wavs on your PC).
2) The LM-4 file (NSKit7 all.txt) can also be imported by either VSampler or DR-008 and is working fine (400+ reads on Cakewalk's forum with no complaints).
3) If you’re having trouble with the drum map, check out the brief tutorial “Loading the NSKit7 Drum Map.pdf.”
4) The .dr8 file has some basic panning and all the hats are assigned to “choke group” 1. Season to taste….

I'd love to get ahold of a Reason NNXT preset. I know I could make it myself, but I'm lazy.

Could you import the SF2 and then edit it down? I use NN-XT all the time, but don't actually use SF2's in it, so I don't know for sure...DKeenum wrote:I'd love to get ahold of a Reason NNXT preset. I know I could make it myself, but I'm lazy.

Yes Reason NN-XT would be great.. you can load sf2 but its not flawless. Also sf2's .wavs are not stereo, but split to two mono files. In most samplers this requires twice the cpu to play back as one stereo .wav (not sure if this is the case with nn-xt)

Just added a modified LM-4 file (Linplug NSKit7.txt) for Linplug users since RMIII has only 18 pads.
If you or somone has RMIII and/or RMIV and could let me know if this works OK, that'd be great.
