howdy payple'
i just built a daw. i followed the mobo manual step by step,everything's hooked up. when i boot it up,how long does it take for the harddrives to be recognized?message on screen says"scanning for hard drives"and thats it,nothing,dont know if its frozen or not. I rechecked the connectors and jumpers.I have the option to press delete for setup and ctrl+alt+del for awdflash.exe...doing either doesnt do anything.Bios is rev 1009.Components used:
cpu: amd athlon xp2700
mobo: asus A7N8X-X
HD's: 1x WD'JB' 80gb (os&apps)set to master on Primary
1x WD'JB' 120gb (audio/smples/files/data)""Slave
Video: Matrox G450
Memory: Corsair ddram512M PC3200C2PT
iiiiiwannamakemuuuussic

please help a rookie.

If a HD is not recognised, it's either broken or badly configured.
Try once without any HD and go to the BIOS main page. It's perhaps the BIOS ?

BTW, the salve HD shouldn't be slave, because when you want to access the slave, you have to ask the master, so it's slower, and for what you want, I wouldn't advice these connections.

My first reaction is the same as Miles.

Make both HDDs masters on your 2 ide channels.

If pressing <del> doesn't take you into the BIOS, then your machine is locking up.

First thing to do is hook a speaker up to the MOBO connections and listen for any error beeps.

Next - disconnect everything except your graphics card and keyboard. Check if you can boot up and access the BIOS.

Next - Add one HDD , strapped as master , to IDE channel 1. Make sure it can see it. If not - try using CS instead of master (CS is cable select - I've seen this before but I can't explain it)

Then, keep adding your bits and bobs one at a time until you're done.

I would install drives 1 at a time. Some MBs work better with Cable select, while others prefer you to set the Master/Slave..

You guys are getting too fast for me!

Try to boot without any hard drives hooked up first. If you can get into the BIOS, you're on your way to figuring it out. Always back out to minimum hardware installed and add one piece at a time to find the problem. It can literally be something as silly as a cable is not seated properly, or a card not firmly in the slot.

Take it easy man! If a Western Digital hard drive is single on the cable it wont work, it will act the way you described...
If a WD is single master, put the jumper between M&S horizontally, 2'nd line (down). Some WD's work as single master if there is no jumper. Just watch the front of your hard drive to see jumper settings.
If it won't work this way, reset your BIOS (or Load Default Settings), and if you have IDE AUTO DETECT, try that. Best thing to leave everything on auto.
Than you can donwload from the wd site the harddisk diagnostic tool.

it worked, but only one HD is recognized. i set the jumper horizontally between master & sl. the other drive is not detected. im gonna connect second HD to the secondary ide ch set as master and the cdrw as slave to see if that works, (i tried everything else). i just need to buy a longer cable. well i went ahead with bios setup and installed xp and evrythings cool i guess but where in the bios do i set cpu to 2ghz(its at 1.5ghz).
can anyone share some BIOS wisdom as far as DAWS go.

I think you will have to search for a jumper or switch in your MB. Set it to Auto or the speed your CPU needs. Maby Bios - CPU setup ?
xp2700 - needs 166 MHz CPU clock...
Just make sure your IDE devices are one Master and one Slave, or One Master one Cable Select.
That trick you made works only if it's single master, as far as I know.

What I do with two drives is ,first connector on the cable goes to master and set jumper accordingly,the second connector on the cable goes to slave and I remove the jumper on that one ,then set drives in device manager to auto.
CPU speed is usually set by adjusting multiplier and frequency to equal cpu ya want..
