Been bouncing around these forums looking for an answer but coming up blank.

I am looking to find a VST soundfont player (Win10 64-bit) that can play multitimbral General MIDI soundfonts, similar to the way existing DXi files like TTS-1 or CoolSoft VirtualMIDISynth (which does not have a VST option).

Just today, I loaded up the Plogue Sforzando SFZ player, which I thought might do the trick, but it does not play General MIDI multimbal soundfonts across the 16 channels. Only can access one instrument in the GM set and it basically plays a GM MIDI file using that instrument for all tracks.

If someone can suggest a 32 bit soundfont player that does play multitimbral Gen MIDI soundfonts and world work in a Win10 64 bit environment, I'd be game to try it.

fmr... I checked into the Cakewalk SFZ plugin and the problem for me using it would be:

"SFZ does not work when using SF2 files on a 64bit system. Known issue. That's why they gave away SFZ+, you used to have to pay for it."

My need is to use a VST plugin to play a General MIDI file in multitimbral mode (all 16 tracks with separate instruments on each track and responding to MIDI program changes).

I appreciate the suggestion. Thanx.

I looked this up and it appears it is no longer available and has been withdrawn. From the limited data available to review, it also appeared to be limited to 8 multitimbral parts instead of the 16 parts required by General MIDI standards.

This product may well fit my need, and there is a demo available to try it out. Sells for 39 Euros (gotta look up the exchange rate).

Will try the demo this weekend and hope it's the right product!

Ah, you may well be right. PC messages can be used to switch between TX16Wx 'performances' or 'programs'. I'm not sure how it loads a soundfont bank (I've never tried it)

I am not sure if it can receive program changes via midi but you can change the presets manually.

Last time I tried that it kept crashing my daw (FL11) when loading a larger Soundfont, but maybe it has been fixed I have no idea.

Iirc it doesn't have reverb and chorus on board, but other than that it's the best I ever tried. Vstsynthfont is a crash fest, at least in reaper x86, and it also looks as if it's being abandoned...

VSTSynthFont can load and play GM soundfonts, is 32 or 64-bit, and free to use (scroll to VSTSynthFont to download).

If your DAW does not play well with VSTSynthFont (my version of Cubase 7.5 does not, but the BitWig and Ableton Live 9 demos have no trouble), it is possible to use something like Qsynth with loopMIDI and JACK Audio Connection Kit.

loopMIDI can route MIDI from your DAW to anywhere else.
JACK can route audio from any application to your DAW.
Qsynth can take MIDI from a loopMIDI port, load and play GM soundfonts, and output audio to JACK.

The limitation here is that Qsynth does not have independent stereo outputs for each channel, so will have to sequentially solo-bounce each channel for full projects. If you really need independent audio channels, you could find another GM soundfont player with that capability (or modify fluidsynth yourself to do this), and route the outputs through JACK.
