There are a lot of great-sounding sample libraries, but it seems so few of them (comparatively) are compatible with the free kontakt player. Is there a licensing fee that must be paid to NI? Do you just convert it from the full version of kontakt? There's a new library being released by insession audio that I won't be getting as the full version if kontakt is required. Thanks.

Yes there is a licensing fee. Contact NI for details / amount etc

As I understand it, only NI can build the Player-compatible library from the third-party's product (or provide the specific tools).

Yup, and the costs involved are substantial, meaning if you plan to sell a hundred copies of a small instrument for £30, you're not even close to paying for the licensing cost.

This is why small, independent libraries don't work on the Kontakt Player. Basically, the Player is NI's way of licensing out their engine to sample library devs so they can sell their libraries to non-Kontakt owning users.

From what I hear it costs a lot of money, but does vary depending on various factors. I would expect it to be in the region of 10K, but this is speculation. This cost is why some libraries cost more than none Kontakt player libraries - So the dev can try and recoup the money spent.

I saw somewhere that it was about 8K for 1000 copies but no idea offhand how recent this was...

Some friends once looked into it for me with the thought that they might pay for it and basically seemed to come to the conclusion that it cost too much and NI didn't seem to have a set rate structure other than the more licenses purchased at once the less per single license cost. Also the approval process takes a long time and my stuff wouldn't have passed it anyway without hiring ED to rewrite everything.

I rather pay for Kontakt full only one time to get all the great libs for small money (hello Synthmagic!) then paying everytime much more just to use any library with the player. That makes absolute no sense to me: Maybe if you buy one instrument for Kontakt in your lifetime..

It takes money.
