can someone suggest some powered monitors? I'de obviosuly like to spend as little as possible, but I don't mind spending up to $300.

The M-Audio BX-5's and BX-8's are great powered monitors. They aren't too great in the low range but you can always add a sub later on.

Is the MAudio DX4 the newr version of the BX4/5?

BX-8's are great man. I dont think you can get better for the money. I use them constantly. they beat out my V8's the first day I had them.

Have you ever heard of the ESI nEar 05?
-We`re buying a pair and we hope that they are
comparable with the M-audio.

from what I've heard and read the Esi as well as the M-Audio (actually the Esi are the old M-audio - Esi
built them for M-Audio) aren't that good - when I had to decide which monitors to choose (and I couldn't spend a fortune as well) I decided to go for the passive Alesis M1 mkII which are really professional monitors -
are you sure you need active ones?

edit: if you really want/need active ones I'd definetely go for the Samson Resolv 50a or 65a depending on what you are able/willing to spend.

We haven`t had any real monitors in the studio yet, so
we are very curious on how this will affect our mixing.

Ah, that's it.... I've been wracking my brain for an hour trying to remember the story with the ESI 05's... all

jens' superior memory.

I have the M-audio BX-5, and I couldn't be happier. They sound terrific, and are flat enough for my purposes... eventually I'll add a subwoofer (the low end is nonexistent), but that's not a huge problem for me anyway since I'm not doing techno/dance or other bass-heavy music.

If you can swing it, BX-8 monitors are supposed to be quite a step up.. but they're also much larger and wouldn't fit on my desk.

I ended up getting the Event TR5. So far they sound pretty good. unfortunately, out is through the Maudio mobile pre which I am becoming less and less happy with every day.

I've read excellent reviews of the Fostex PM series monitors. It may be worth checking some reviews to see what you think.

I have outs going from the MobilePre into a mini mixer from Rolls, and then out from the mini mixer into my monitors. It's not that the MobilePre's outs sound bad...they just have very little headroom.

I'm an enthusiastic user of BX-5, but will agree on the lacking low end (I have a very good Hi-Fi that I A/B on for low end).

Btw: I read in an interview that BT uses BX-5 (with sub in a surround setup). He was very happy for these small babies

Can anyone not recommend to get some passive monitors and use them thru' a 15-year-old Yamaha-HiFi-amplifier?

Because I'm thinking about gettin' either the SAMSON Resolv 65 passive (which are 199,- € at a local shop)or the SAMSON Resolv 50 active (which are 269,-).

I couldn't get my hands on a passive Alesis, so I went for the Samson Resolv65 passive - so there's still some money left for a subwoofer, when there's need for it.
