A very interesting article here from
RetroCrush about their idea of the 50 coolest song parts ever.
A few surprises, and a good choice of their number one.
What is your number 1, or 2, or 3, or as many as you can think of.

No.1 and No.2 are easy.
(1) In Yello's "Pinball Cha-Cha" there is an extended timbale solo in the middle of the track. The sequence right after that solo is my all time No.1 moment in any track. The rising strings and muted trumpet stabs over the electronic beat take my breath away every time.
(2) The last minute of Glen Campbell's "Wichita Lineman". Actually I love the whole song, but the instrumental outro is just sublime.
Number 3 is going to be a bit more difficult. Lemme think.....................

Phil Collins?????
"When it comes to cool song parts, there is no greater "wait a minute...here it comes" moment than the when the drums finally kick in during Phil Collins' haunting, "In The Air Tonight". Nobody who listens to this song in their car can resist smacking their steering wheel along to the beat. And if they're anything like me, they usually do it too early and look like a jerk to all of their friends!"
Surely he accomplished looking like a twat from the moment he bought the record by the dimunutive, balding, tory fuckwit, p**g r**cking, balladeer.
And where was the riff from 'raining blood' by Slayer?

Pink Floyd's Atom Earth Mother...
each part is unforgettable... but particularly the one when the choir sings in the unknown language...

Sonic Youth 'Teenage Riot' - after the intro when the main riff kicks in... sublime.
Yo La Tengo 'Autumn Sweaters' - the little bass synth riff... makes me shiver everytime for some reason.
Leo Kottkes 'Machine No....2(?)' - the whole damn guitar part is just perfect.
the cello in Nick Drakes 'Cello Song'

"Just Like You Imagined" by Nine Inch Nails. Starting at 2:10 until about 2:27. Simply amazing. Turn the volume way up, focus in, really feel it and it's absolutely incredible!!! It's the crescendo to end all crescendo's. I think he built up from about 10 tracks to 128 in a matter of seconds. Intense to say the least.
"ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" Then the whole world speeds up to lightspeed and there's an amazing explosion. If I could choose to listen to something the last :17 seconds of my life that would be it. WOW!!!

I saw that page last week too... There's bunch of stuff I would have included... But some that come to mind are the Robert Fripp solo in Talking Heads "Born Under Punches," the bridge from "I'm Not In Love" 10cc, the drum solo from Sly and the Family Stone's "Sex Machine" and the weird sprong noise from Aphex Twin's "Bucephalus Bouncing Ball." I couldn't stop at 50.

It's a nice idea to put up such an 'all time favorites'-website, but it's indeed so very retro.
Where to find this kind of sites with (at least a little) more contemporary music?

The more I hang around at KVR the less music I make.
