I went away, and then I came back, having discovered that if you don't go to the boozer every night you can make some more music...

I do like to mess about with genres and seeing what what can be done. Whilst I've previously done faux 'Motown' style things I've never properly attempted a 70s soul influenced song. Until now.
I reckon the music has come out quite well. Vocally; welllllll..Marty bastard Pellow springs to mind. Smothered it in loads of plug-in genreated harmonies and multi-tracking, but Marty's still there...

Spent quite a bit of time trying to get the mix right on this. Is it? Who knows? Lost all perspective now.

Won't list it all. loads of the plug-ins, just the 'stars of the show' so to speak.

Drumdrups 'badge' kit - bloody marvellous

Satantank - strings and some guitar
That organ VST by the Mr Ray people.
Some other guitar soundfonts (I could have played the bloody stuff quicker!)

Free CM harmonizer called 'veikling' or something
Lots and lots of kompressors..

Snare is too fwd in the mix, and too snappy/sharp. Personally i'd use something grittier, poss even a jath snare.

Sounds very nice Mr Tugger.
Great arrangement, nice singing (believe it or not!), and excellent instrumentation.

My only criticism is that the snare drum doesn't feel quite right to me in this mix - a bit too 'thin' compared to the rest of the mix for my liking. That might just be because of its comparatively upfront sound compared to the other kit elements though.

Anyway, very pleasant song and a welcome change to have a bit of soul here.

Cheers both, a bit of a concensus there then!

I did originally use the Ludwig 400 snare from the same set of samples, but got seduced by the big 'Acrolite' one which I believe was used on a lot of Al Green recordings.

A bit knackered now, but will have a go with the other one, set back a bit in the mix on the morrow and re-post.

In passing, I'm mightily impressed that on the KVR main webpage there is a cock and balls currently dancing around the New Music subheading (that sixth one with the orange arrow).
I realize that simple KVR technology involving your user ID pic may have something to do with this, but still...

It certainly stands out from the other (few) avatar logos.

Life-affirming stuff.

I did a new version and the original snare does seem to sit more nicely, and a more 'retro' sound too, always a bonus. Bastard ISP went down (and my phone stopped working too - catastrophic simultaneous technical meltdown) but the winternet is working again now so I've uploaded it;

Nice tune. The music is excellent and sounds very professional.

I think the vocals would be clearer with less processing. I think the harmonizers are making them muddy.

I totally got a George Michael vibe from the intro but then it opened up into something else completely. I really enjoyed this. Nice composition and instrumentation. I may have made some different choices in the mix but I can hear everything clearly. Probably works better than any of my attempts to mix stuff like this. I loved the bass parts and the strings at the end.

Hmm, except for the "funky" 70s guitar, I get a Moody Blues vibe from this track. It's the mellotron strings that does it, I think. I can hear Justin Hayward singing this.
