I am about to install a new hard drive in my PowerMac G4 and would like to transfer the operating system over to it without having to reinstall the OS. This is fairly straightforward on the PC with imaging tools like Ghost, but I am not so sure on the Mac platform. I know there are a lot of files, resource forks etc... that are hidden from the user, so I am very doubtful that I would be able to simply drag'n'drop all of the files over to the new drive within the Finder and "bless" the System folder. Are there any utilities that you know of which will allow me to copy every single file 100% from one drive to another? Thanks.

Check out a utility called Carbon Copy Cloner. I've used it to replace a hard drive in my laptop: make disc image, copy disc image to new drive, done. In your case you can just copy and be done.

There's another one called 'Clean install assistant' that's been with the mac since OS8.5; I used it like 1,001 times & I never had a problem ever.

For anyone else that may have similar questions, while perusing the web I came across yet another disk transfer/backup freeware utility that is extremely easy to use. It's called SilverKeeper by LaCie and can be downloaded at the following location:
