A kinda commercial techno track. My girlfriends's godchild asked me for the name of it. Well, I'm not the techno kind of guy... Anyone?

It's not techno, it's trance. Listen to these soundclips to get some kind of idea of what techno might sound like.

it's crap is what it is......
of course that is only my opinion.... each to their own.
edit: genres are bollocks anyway, every day there is a new one.
today we will mostly be listening to intelligent big beat dog meat technocratic boom box music !!!
Not sure why i knew the name so quick though

I agree that the Darude track is weak, but my point was that techno is something completely different. I love techno but I dislike trance, and because of this I don't want people to use the terms intercangeably.
Bollocks. Techno and trance are both old genres, not new trends. And even though all those subgenres might seem confusing to an outsider, they are quite clear and harmless for those who are really into the genres. I can easily operate with the subgenres of the styles I really like (IDM-breakcore-drill'n'bass-... Post-rock-shoegaze-... House-microhouse...). Believe it or not, these genres indicate an actual distinction in the music, even though I admit that some subgenres seem a bit forced.edit: genres are bollocks anyway, every day there is a new one.

But this issue has been discussed ad nauseum anyway.

the "crap" reference was about genres in general i find that listening to a tune and making my own mind up is much more interesting than "limiting" myself to certain genres.
still you make a fair point i suppose.
i'm only jealous cos i don't know which genre my muisc fits into
btw
used to love "bugged out" at sankeys in mcr which is a techno night, dave clark, ritchie hawtin et al.

Don´t you think that the original artist(s) might find it a bit offencive if you label their music wrong?blaster78 wrote:the "crap" reference was about genres in general i find that listening to a tune and making my own mind up is much more interesting than "limiting" myself to certain genres.

he/she might, thats true....
although if anyone listens to my music i'm happy.... full stop
don't really care how they refer to it as long as they get some enjoyment out of it.
I suspect many musicians would feel the same.

I feel that the idea of genres somehow limiting / interferencing with a listening experience is just a common misconception. I have many records that shamelessly disregard all genre boundaries, but I'm not tormented by this fact while listening to them. I have several albums on my shelf with which I'd have definite problems if asked to classify them. Doesn't disturb me in the least. Then I have albums which fall easily into some subgenre, but when listening to them their genre-charasteristics are not the uppermost thing in my mind either.blaster78 wrote:in general i find that listening to a tune and making my own mind up is much more interesting than "limiting" myself to certain genres.
Yeah, but the genres play their part before one actually listens to your music. They are relevant when searching for music and when communicating/informing people of your music.although if anyone listens to my music i'm happy.... full stop

I'm on many music related mailing-lists and read several music zines, which is mainly 1.) why I have developed a relatively firm conception of many genre boundaries and 2.) why I need an understanding like this. I'm constantly searching for fresh artists from the more marginal genres, and the firmer I grasp the fields, the easier the task is. But okay, I'll just stop my jabber now...

But generally speaking, labeling someones music wrong is a good way to look stupid.
