Is there a list of current sample based plugins?

And if there is no such list, can we create one?

I have tried kvr database searches, but they are inconsistent and list many dead projects.

I am talking about anything from beatslicers to romplers, from simple, vintage style instruments like TAL-sampler, to monster instruments like Kontakt.

Any information that anyone can supply would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

OK, I realize that this might sound ridiculous, because samples are used in one out of three instrument plugins available on the market today.

What I am interested in listing are plugins that allow the user to interact with the samples creatively. So, synth plugins with sampled 'oscillators' that can't be edited or changed by the user would be excluded, while something like Crystal or Alchemy would be included, even if most people don't use them as samplers per se.

Yeah, I looked there, and there are many dead links and links to long abandoned software.

I guess I was hoping that some maniac had already set up a site somewhere, as maniacs are wont to do. I have been away from sampling for a bit, and many of the names I remember seem to be gone or discontinued, so it is hard to know where to begin.

So, we have...

Kontakt
Sforzando
Maize Sampler
TAL-Sampler

And I seem to recall that Alchemy was bought by Apple along with the rest of Camel Audio.

....and then I draw a blank.

Like I said, I searched the database, and came up with almost nothing. I vaguely remember many names for many plugins that I simply can't recall exactly. It is kind of like chasing ghosts in your head...are they real, or do you just think that they're real?

I think the problem might be that the word 'sampler' means many different things to different people. Hell, guitarists and many others use 'loop station' pedals which are essentially samplers, but no one calls them that.

Maybe it would be best at first to try to categorize the different kinds of samplers available. While synthesizers are neatly categorized into Analog, or Additive, or FM, or Wavetable, or Phase Distortion, or whatever, samplers lack these orderly labels.

So, any suggestions for sampler categories, anyone?

C'mon, hundreds of kvr 'Analog vs VA' threads have reached word counts that rival War and Peace! There are at least 80 of them every year. Surely we can spend a few minutes arguing about sampler categories, can't we?

I think first there has to be a standard, agreed definition of what makes a "sampler"....

I tend to think of it like this - anything that enables me to take multiple sound sources/samples and mix/merge/mash them together to create something new, once it is recorded. And there is the thing. A "sampler" should have the ability to record the output itself. But with VST instruments that is not always the case.

So if I set up, say, in energyXT an instance of Anomaly/Wusik and an instance of HG Fortunes STS-24 as well as a weird, varied FX chain - that gives me a lot of potential sound sources to work with right there....

4 for the STS-24, 4 for Anomaly/Wusik and a whole bunch for the WavSeqs....

But in this instance - energyXT would be the "sampler". It is that which actually samples the output.

But - both the STS-24 and the Anomaly/Wusik instruments on their own can drastically alter the original sounds..... So they would fall under the definition of instruments that can meaningfully alter sources.

Yes, it is a mess.... :)

Thanks!!! I kept thinking of 'Magenta' and got nowhere.

Padhop Pro and Iris 2 have both become very useful for me as synthesizers.

Falcon has some nice tools for manipulating samples. There's a lot that can be done at the oscillator level, even before using the filters and effects.

We're already off to a great start, considering that both Geist and Simpler are very capable beatslicers.

Obviously & if you have Simpler & Geist you also have a sequencer

I very much like Alchemy, Wusik, Iris1/2 and Mangle. I will add:

MuTool's MUX (PC/Mac VST) a modular sampling environment with a sampler instrument; a layering pad instrument; a multisampler/slicer; hybrid sample/2-oscillator synth; a sample-based drum module, wavetable and granular modules, basic audio editing, and many other modules. (64-bit Mac is in final beta now)

Tx16Wx by CWITEC (PC/Mac, free version) a terrific multitimbral instrument that actually samples, slices, and loads WAV, AIFF, Ogg, FLAC and Yamaha waves, Sf2 and SFZ

Hybrid synths that import samples: Rhino, Tassman, Alchemy, Wusik, Iris1/2 and Mangle

Many standalone sound design environments that load samples, my favourites being:
- Melodyne 4 Studio: Major update this year with unique sound design features
- RX5: A detailed spectral editor and VST host
- Cecilia 5: DSP environment with a nice UI
- MetaSynth (Mac only): the visual studio is still updated
- AudioFinder (Mac only): a multitool that is a sample file manager, player, analyzer, slicer, processor and converter.

And there is of course the mighty HALion 5, and Diversion also plays single samples and has a rudimentary granular mode. Serum also plays single samples in the Noise-oscillator.

And the new Avenger can use multi-samples/single samples in each of the oscillators and also has a drum sampler. It doesn't have a sample editor though and no looping function, so all samples have to be looped in an audio editor (e.g. Wavelab) before importing them into Avenger (which then converts the wav-multisamples to it's own proprietary format).
