I'm finding it to be a PITA because I switch between my desktop and laptop so often. Is there a way to authorize it on specific machines so I don't need the donlge? Talking about Cubase Pro 9.

No, dongle is necessary for Pro and Artist versions.

do we really need more Cubase threads? BTW this one is already leaning toward a lock as we also do not need another dongle thread.

This doesn't answer the OP's specific dilemma, but this is the reason I bought a copy of the dongle-free Elements as well as Pro 8. It doesn't allow for continuous seamless working between Desktop and Laptop, but if I need to at least start something I always can. The restrictions of Elements are a hindrance but not as severe as one might think for this purpose.

it's neccesary on Cubase 6.5 unfortunately. I haven't been able to use a 'hard disk' method, it really sucks actually.

I was away for more than a year, and this place is almost dead in comparison 3-4 years ago. There were a couple of pages every day in every forum almost. Now it moves maybe half a page in a week.

What we, this place need - is that people bother coming here....with whatever subject....

Dongle is perfect for this. I hope you are not overhelmed switching laptop/desktop on and off everytime you move.

I don't see that big of a problem either, many copy peotecion schemes or EULA's allow the activation of the software on one or two machines max, and, with the dongle, you can activate on as many machines as you want, as long as you don't run them simultaneously, which of course isn't possible. Dongle sticking out is of course not so cool. Maybe one day, we'll have a finger print based activation or something like that.

I have an e-licenser and iLok -- both on a powered USB hub tucked out of sight, so that I sometimes forget I even have them.

They have been on this hub for a couple of years, without a single glitch or problem.

but you're not the one who has to moderate all the threads. Add in the all too common dongle threads which attract the same dongle bashers and we dont really need it. In the Cubase thread people are asking all kind of questions and getting them answered, we have more than one thread doing that so imo we do not need a thread for every cubase question.

I actually thought about getting a powered USB hub, because my audio interface only works when i deactivate my wireless adapter, and, according to other users, it's supposed to work better when plugged into a powered USB hub (something very sensitive about USB power it seems). I usually have my eLicenser dongle in the USB port of my computer keyboard though, so, it doesn't block any front USB port anyway.

new to Cubase, is the dongle neccesary?
