Studio One: FM8 Arpeggiator not syncing correctly

Hey,

i'm having a frustrating problem with Studio One and the Arpeggiator in FM8.

Let's say I have a 1 bar MIDI Part with a simple chord progression, duplicated so that the progression repeats per bar, and FM8 loaded with the Arp switched on. When I play the arrangement from the very start (Bar 1, Beat 1) then the Arp pattern sounds as it should. But as soon as I try to start playback anywhere else (but on a bar start), then Studio One seems to get confused and the pattern sounds completely different.

I always have to start playback at Bar1-Beat1 to have correct Arp behavior.

I can sort of fix this in FM8 by not letting it sync to the host tempo. As long as the tempo in FM8 differs from the host the pattern plays as expected, e.g. 119bpm in FM8 vs 120bpm in S1. But as soon as both values match the problem is there again. And of course this fix is not really practical.

I tried it on two different PCs. Other hosts work fine. It's a Studio One issue. Version is Studio One Pro 3.3.

There was a problem, or still is present, in FM8 64-bit where its Arp would not play the first note (The 32-bit version is not affected). My problem is unrelated to that. Tested a 32-bit jBridged version and it's the same phenomenon.

Did anyone else notice this?

key sync on?

Post

I played with Key Sync and it seems to be a combination of the problem already known, regardless which host is used, and the problem I described with Studio One.

When Key Sync is on, 64-bit FM8 drops the first note. Looping doesn't fix it. This is the problem already known with 64-bit FM8. 32-bit FM8 plays the pattern as expected (according to the key sync feature), regardless on which bar playback starts. But of course, with more complex midi patterns, activated Key Sync by nature sounds very different from it being disabled. So if you designed your pattern with Key Sync off in mind, then this isn't really helpful.

With Key Sync off my described problem in first post kicks in, with both 64-bit and 32-bit FM8. First play anywhere besides Bar1-Beat1 = problem, after loop = plays fine (looping seems to fix it). What I also observed is that the first problematic loop seems to sound just like the known 64-bit problem with Key Sync On: The first note is dropped and then on loop the first note is played.

So, in Studio One, only FM8 32-bit in Key Sync mode works fine here. But, like I said, if you designed the pattern without Key Sync in mind that sucks big time.

It's really weird with the looping. It actually doesn't fix it with the first loop, I have to loop it until x time passed for it to get fixed. x time is the time from arrangement start to the play locator. Example: I start playback at Bar 4. The pattern sounds wrong for 3 bars worth of looping, and then the 4th will sound fine, and only then. So it kind of has to internally replay the time I skipped by jumping to any position besides Bar1-Beat1, and only after that time has passed it will sound correct.

WTF??

I hate to hear such weird things bout FM8,
'coz it's part of the few synths I really use in my muzic..
