All or nothing with Cubase SX and MIDI knob box control

Using a UC-16 to control my VSTs (Vanguard and Albino). I'm having no problem setting up the generic remote channels... but when I assign a knob to a VST function I get all or nothing with the values, in that the virtual knob will turn all the way off or all the way on... there are no in between values being sent. This happens with both my synths. What am I doing wrong?

I set up no generic remote devices for my K5000r Knob box (16 knobs, was designed for the Kawai, but sends MIDI) and works fine for Albino, Reaktor, Vanguard, etc etc etc. Just select MIDI Learn, and it does it.
What I would do is record the movements and look at the track to see what MIDI information it's saving out though to get your started.

Interesting. So you just have Cubase learn the values of the channel and don't do anything with the assigning in the window under it? (in the generic remote device manager)
I understand the learn function, but how does Cubase know what to control in the specific VST?
Thanks for the zippy response, Devon.

Yup. I have my MIDI box on the same MIDI cable/channel as my keyboard. So my MIDI Input is my keyboard. In the VSTi, I just select MIDI Learn, and twist the knob, slide the slider, etc. and it learns it, no problem. The Remote Controls are more for transport controls, like start/stop/record etc setting those up.

Ok, at the risk of sounding like a dunce... where can you tell Vanguard or Albino to learn the knob twist aside from the device manager? You can't right-click a knob for an "assign controller" function a la Fruity or Reason with those VSTs. From your post it sounds like you can...

"All or nothing" behaviour on the remote sounds like you have set flags in the generic remote that shouldn't be there.
Make sure that the controls in the list of input faders' flags are only set to "Receive", not "Transmit" or "Relative". In the list of target controls, make sure the flags are not set to "Push Button", "Toggle" or "Not Automated".
Also make sure you are using the "Generic Remote" or Cubase preset on your UC-16.
You can use the MIDI learn feature within each VSTi but it will be different for each one. (Sorry, I don't use Vanguard or Albino, but plugins like z3ta+ just require a right-click on each fader)
It also depends on whether you prefer editing MIDI automation data or Cubase automation tracks.

Well, for what I know, it depends on the VSTi, if it has no MIDI learn you only have 2 options: use the remote device, witch is usually fine, or if the VSTi uses control changes to control its knobs assign them to your controller and record the MIDI data.greypooch wrote:Ok, at the risk of sounding like a dunce... where can you tell Vanguard or Albino to learn the knob twist aside from the device manager? The generic remote parameters work fine... I get a big list of what is controllable specific to the VST and turning my knob works the appropriate on-screen control. It's the values that aren't working right.
Cold c, I played with the flags since I figured that was the problem but didn't have any luck. I'll try again since you have more specific info. Thanks.

how do you record the tweaks of the vsti knobs in sx ? I did "record" but no changes. I want an automation that cutoffs the sound in vanguard (or any other vsti)
do the don't

Depends what kind of automation you are trying to record.moldofunker wrote:how do you record the tweaks of the vsti knobs in sx ? I did "record" but no changes. I want an automation that cutoffs the sound in vanguard (or any other vsti)
If you want to record your "Generic Remote" automation then you have to use the "W" button on the automation track or the VST plug while the track is playing to write the automation. Then press the corresponding "R" to read the automation.
If you want to record MIDI CC data (and your VST plugin is set to respond to CC data) then you record it to a MIDI track just like note data, on a record-enabled MIDI track (with the transport record button).

Yo Cold C...
Tried your flag configuration and it works great! Obviously had the wrong flag combination when trying. Thanks a bunch. Now onto Learning how to get two MIDI devices (MIDI keyboard and USB knob box) working in tandem. Any suggestions?
