Where is Keyboard Sonic Synth 2?

Just received the July issue of Keyboard and once again they are saying "by the time you are reading this you should be able to download the keyboard version of Sonic Synth 2".
Go to the webpage and still nothing.
Squids, I am a big fan of your work and we share a love of prog music but this can't be helping public relations for your company.
I'm not saying it's your fault but this should not have been publicized until the thing was up and running.
As a KvR member I have the luxury of coming here and find out what's going on but many readers of Keyboard do not and I'm afraid these delays may have a negative affect.
There is nothing on the website explaining what is going on, perhaps some info there might be reassuring to those who come to download the demo as promised.
Good luck and I'm sure it will be worth the wait.
take it easy, rick

Yet another disappointment. On the one hand, when a SR or SR affiliated project is late,it's because Squids and the crew are working at getting it right,so I am if anything more confident about the product. However, the release of the free version has now been prematurely announced twice by Keyboard.Very bad form indeed. As I said,I don't mind waiting for quality's sake, but what's up with the repeated, avoidable snafu?

It's even worse because Keyboard has stated they will perform a type of challenge-response to even download this 'demo'. They claim you need to have your May issue in hand to perform this copy protection.
As a subscriber to Keyboard but non-packrat, I read magazine issues and then toss them the next month. If the statement is true, then I can only surmise there will be very few people who are actually able to see this product, and many more with a sour taste in their mouths.
While the delay is tolerable, I would laugh if I can't even get it when its released due to the delay.

Okay, yes you're right. It was way premature and hind sight is 20/20. I can't go back in time and put this stuff in the July issue instead. I wish I could. The web site does say that it is coming and that you can put your email on the list to be notified when it is available. There is nothing I can do about it being late. We ran into some delays in development which as you guys know can happen. I thought we'd have it several weeks ago which is why it's reasonable to assume that it would be up by the time the July issue was out. Unfortunately, we ran into another delay because it uses a whole new system for authorization (as will the commercial boxed version of Sonik Synth 2). Bad timing to have changed the system but the purpose of it is pretty important for the long run. Next time I will have to give a 2 month window for something like this because as you can see it had backfired on us when it was intended as a fun good thing (and for free)... it's a mistake in the timing of it.
As far as negativity goes though... I don't know. It's not intentional and when it is finally up I think it will be appreciated. Why not? It's free so if people want it then hopefully they can wait. If they "gave up on it" then perhaps they weren't interested enough in the first place?
This is a promotional thing to kick off the launch of the actual full boxed version of Sonik Synth 2 which is something I think many people will thoroughly enjoy. I have been for a while. We went over the top on it and the delay on one side only means that more development occurs on another. It balances out as some of you would think... as in just making the product as good as it can be.
So, I apologize for the delay but I hope it is worth it. It should be up soon although I don't want to guess so I will tell everyone when it is within a day of being up. As far as the "challenge-response" thing with the Keyboard issue... it's very simple. We'll ask a question on the web page: "What's the name of the band discussed in the first music example on page 32 ofthe May 2004 issue of Keyboard magazine?" If you want to throw out the magazine then look it up now and write it down. I'll give you a hint. The drummer's name is Neil. This is just a way for Keyboard readers to have it exclusively for them. It's pretty loose so don't worry, if you want it bad enough we'll help you get it.
Even just being around here shows that you are into this stuff and we appreciate that and want to help you get it. Although when I hear someone say "yet another disappointment" it's not all that nice to hear when we work our butts off to make great products that shine above most.

Sorry about the "Yet another disappointment",Squids, that was really much more about Keyboard than you.I only meant to say that I was disappointed again to have the free version announced and then it not be there.I do understand,I do appreciate your work, and I did say that the delay was actually a good sign because it meant that the product is getting done right. As it turns out,I will probably only be buying one synth this year, and I am looking to SS2 free to help make that decision, which is leaning strongly towards SS2.So please understand that My statement about disappointment was based on the positive anticipation I have about the synth.
I accept your explanation and apology, and I hope you accept mine.

Squids, thanks for responding.
The purpose of my Topic was to draw to your attention the Keyboard referral to the website for download of Sonic Synth 2(lite)and how many readers may find it frustrating to find it unavailable at this time again.
I myself can wait because I know you are making sure everything is right and as I have said earlier when this was first announced I know this is a labor of love for you of all your sampled vintage synths.
I do feel some type of statement should be posted on the website directed to the readers of Keyboard that there will be a delay rather than the same "coming soon" line which has been there since the announcement.
Please don't take any of my comments as criticism directed towards you or Sonic Reality or IK for that matter.
It sounds like you guys are working full blast to make a past deadline which in itself can be very stressful plus any glitches which are certain to occur when trying to meet a deadline.
I'm sorry this has turned your excitement and fun factor into "silent sorrow in empty boats".
You don't need to apologize.
Take care of yourself, rick

Quoting the Lamb is always a good thing.
No worries guys. I'm with you. I agree wtih everything you've all said. The problem with the website page is that it is not an SR page. It's an IK page and I can't keep asking that webmaster to change it while he has a million other tasks to do too. He knows he is going to have to set up the whole password protected thing when we have the download ready. I wanted to do a "counter" thing on there originally but then if it counted down to zero and it still wasn't ready I'd be in even deeper trouble! So, I have to just ride it this time. Every day we don't have it up makes me angry at myself for thinking it would be so easy. The sounds are done (and actually work in ST2... anyone wanna beta test em?). But, the software side is still being worked on. It's out of my hands personally so I am anxiously waiting myself for that part. The time we are spending on the sounds of the full boxed version because of the delay though only means... well... more great sounds will be included upon release! In fact, I took the extra time to even add some synths such as a rediculous complete sampling of the Arp Prosoloist (the Tony Banks lead synth). I already had samples of it before in there but this time I thought I might as well put in every sound it had... just in case you wanted "Noze" or "Pulsar" or "Comic Wow" etc. Of course, most people don't know what on Earth I am talking about and to them they are just cool Arp sounds. But, for the handful of people who would be disappointed because no one will ever make a virtual Arp Prosoloist plug-in... this is the next best thing.

Thanks Squids, again sorry this has turned into this headache for you but like any difficult birth the rewards will come when you hear the smiles of all the users out here when it hits the streets.
Good luck, hang in there and you know you have all of our support here at KvR who honor and respect your work.
Btw, I am on that e-mail list so I'll just wait to see it.

To a degree the anticipation will give the eventual release an anti-climatic feel. I wasn't expecting a full blown synth or anything, just wanted to take it for a drive. The wait for it kinda took the air out for me, but I can see it's not your fault.Squids wrote:Thanks for the support guys.
It's funny because the free version is mostly just good for playing the riffs in the article. It's also good for a variety of vintage analog synth sounds in general because it has Moog and Arp raw waves in it plus the Prophet 5 triangle which is great for Genesis pads plus some other analog synth waves. But, like SampleTank FREE it doesn't read more samples than those that are specially coded for it. However, it can read combi patches that can be made with the internal waveforms. As an analog synth with built-in effects it is actually quite a nice freebie. But, the anticipation and hype has me a little worried about expectations for the free version... I am only thinking some people are expecting it to be... well... maybe more like what the full boxed version (ie. a full synth workstation sound set).
I can just picture someone saying "I waited and waited for it and when it was finally available it only had analog synth sounds!". Of course, that was what the article was about and the free version is meant for playing the riffs in the article. But, I bet some will people confuse it with what the full version will do. I hope not but what do you think?
I'll go kick my dog now. Oh shit, I don't have a dog

I suppose the gimmick aspects of the free version lives as long as someone really is interested in the substance of the article (ie. classic synth albums). Of course at the end of the day I think you can just look at the whole Sonik Synth 2 product itself and decide if it is something they can use in your musical productions or not. The full boxed version goes way beyond being able to faithfully play licks from your favorite Rush, Genesis, Steely Dan, Pink Floyd and other classic rock band's synth sounds. It's a workhorse for doing all styles of music with many unique sounds that can be very inspiring.

The reason I am interested in the SS2 free version is that will give me the opportunity to test drive the SampleTank 2 engine.
My thoughts are if I like the engine of the free version and it works properly in Sonar, then I can assume the full version of SS2, SP, ST2, and all the SR stuff will act the same.
That will allow me to make a proper purchase decision.

Well, there may just be something else that will also serve that purpose coming soon too... maybe sooner in fact.
