Hi Everyone,
I really would appreciate any advice in choosing a stable audio editor for the PC. I am a Mac owner and so need some assistance in choosing an editor for our church (which uses windows PCs). At the moment we are using Nero wave editor to record our services on a computer running windows 98. I think the PC is an Athalon 1700 processor or something. We will be purchasing a pentium 4 PC for this application though. Our problem has been that Nero will record reliably but will frequently crash (sometimes needing a restart) when attempting to edit the files (typically around 1GB in size). Consequently, I have been transferring the files to hard disk and taking them home to edit on my Mac

. This has been ok for a stop gap measure but we really need to be doing the editing on the church computer. My problem is I don't know whether the instability is caused by Nero, the PC or windows 98

. As I have said we are getting a new PC and so I want to ensure we don't encounter the same problems with the new computer/editing software. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as there are so many programs available of this type and my searches on the net haven't helped me narrow down the field.

I've been a user of Sound Forge for quite a long time, and I'm very happy with it.

May be you can get some kind of discount as a church, I've got mine for $99.- (version 5) and I'm nobody.

Recently upgrade to version 7 and it's quite good an easy to use.

Depending on your needs I would get SoundForge or WaveLab if you need to do quite some editing as well.
In case you won't, the allready mentioned Audacity should just do the job. Small, free, convenient and crash free (at least so far, over here).
WL and SF are multi-purpose tools and they aren't exactly cheap either (at least WL isn't). If you only need a 2-track recorder with more or less basic editing features, they are way too much. In that case Audacity is the way to go. Just give it a test ride, doesn't cost you a penny.
Personally, I couldn't live without WL anymore, but that's just because I sample quite a lot and therefor need some proper looppoint adjusting tool. I don't think that'll be important in your case.

yes, although I recommend SF for a more fine job, I support Audacity also, very good software, give it a try.
