Thoughts on slate digital vmr vs mcdsp 6050?

VMR is more emulation of existing hardware with little to no ability to go "out of range". 6050 is more creative and capable of extreme and strange effects. They compliment each other. If you are looking for hardware emulation go for VMR. If you are looking for creative solutions go with 6050. If you just had to pick one, I'd say 6050 because it's more versatile with 10+10 EQs and compressors plus a palette of other processors for saturation and vibe.djmino02 wrote:Thoughts on slate digital vmr vs mcdsp 6050?

Right on! I had a demo of 6050 and I liked it.
I'll have to demo vmr too.

VMR (especially when coupled with VCC) is in a class of it's own. Nothing wrong with McDSP, in fact in reason I have some of their stuff and it's quite good. But VMR is a feat of excellence that is w/o comparison imho.

I have slate and I think it's overrated as hell. In fact I never use it. I get much better results with Lindell, PSP, Kush, duende, boz for compressors and EQ. Even t-racks for sum API. This is coming for a all hardware engineer with over hundreds of thousands with of studio equipment in my production facility. Volko just released some great API modules. Don't get me wrong slate are not bad but just not the best IMO. Everytime I've used them things got thinner, harsher or phasey ( rarely the latter).
McDSP I have never used can't comment. For consoles and tape nebula is great if just using it for that as real as your going to get. Eqs they are great too but clunkier to use due to limited bands per instance. Check out empirical labs arousor expensive but great. There's options, but remember only you know what's best for you demo and try all. The subscription to slate will allow you to test cheaply along with Kush.
Blackrooster la2a
Blackrooster la3a
Lindell te-100
Lindell 254e
Kush hammer
Kush eleckta
PSP e27
Boz 10db
Boz the hoserxt
Audified u73b
PSP fetpressor
These are some of the best tools itb have made IMO for real hardware emulation. I've shot them out with the real thing other then boz dunt have those and they will make you wanna sell the hardware.
With all that being said you can certainly cut a awesome track with just slate. It's just never my first pick and the console saturation is a bit fake to my ears but can be useful for some cases. The Varimu compressor adds a nice mid push to the source that sometimes works great even when the compressor is not engaged.
The preamps I was most excited about which is why I bought the bundles but they seem to make things a bit harsher but Kush seemed to give me the right time I was looking for with his pres. Of course this is all subjective. The 1176 from slate are decent. The eqs are okay also. Just much better choices. As I said earlier demo demo then when your ready to buy demo some more. Good luck

alot of Mcdsp's plugins are very old (15 years) so if u think it'll sound closer to the real thing i doubt it.
i assume that the mcdsp 6050 is basically taking their old code and wrapping it in a Multi-FX package

This the main reason I never bought their stuff. Old code and technology has evolved so much since they been out.realmarco wrote:alot of Mcdsp's plugins are very old (15 years) so if u think it'll sound closer to the real thing i doubt it.

Oldie but goodie?
Thanks for the suggestions! I was considering the Kush Hammer. The Boz look cool.
I had arousor for a bit with a UAD twin USB but my computer kept crashing and I had to send it all back.

However there are many examples of "old code" that still sounds great and in some cases top of the heap. So again, try the demos, read reviews - not every tool is going to be a "god send" for everyone.damayor wrote:This the main reason I never bought their stuff. Which brings me back to what I said.......
I love VMR. I really do. Then again, about me, I don't like "push it to the limit OMG pump it up" stuff. I use what I use as a tool to add/cut, compress according to my "old school" thoughts and ears.
To me, it's off the hook. McDsp is also very good. I don't care about how old their code is, it either appeals to you for what you are doing, or not.

Only reason I referred to old code is because I only buy plugins that emulate hardware as I am mainly buying them for extra channels to run Side by side with my hardware. I need the best faithful emulations. If I was all itb I wouldnt care. If you have no hardware but want that sound I recommend eventually grabbing all I recommended. Then grab fabfilter EQ for the transparent surgical duties.

Anybody tried Nomad Factory's Analog Studio Rack?
I just got a demo for it and it's pretty sweet. It's from the guy behind Tantra

i tried the slate vmr and wasn't impressed really. i'd rather have an all in one plugin than a bunch of different modules. i also don't like the whole upgrade thing like IK multimedia has. i feel like they leave a lot to be desired so you'll buy more of their add-ons.

worthy mentions it also has what APi EQ have (sharper the bell the more u add gain)
its got a De-Esser and Dynamic EQ
and its got all the Mid side stuff, no need for MSEd at all
i also like that it has a 32 step undo with qhick slots for quiclky comparing EQ settings with one click intead of using a preset browser and slecting presets that are far from each other
