i dunno man, it's a really wierd problem to have :?

first, are you *sure* that you did this before without a preamp, and didn't have these problems? i can't really imagine that. anyway, i guess in that case, what are you doing differently now, from before when 'it all just worked'?

regardless, as suggested already you really should invest in a preamp. even for your needs something really cheap like an m-audio audiobuddy (under $100). seriously, just to get your levels up and the signal-to-noise ratio something exponentially different from the problem in your sample recording. i really think it would solve all the problems you are talking about here.

Anyway... I think I'm going to finally have to open up my pocket book and buy a few Elevayta vst's... I love the concepts, and the price is fair.
