ok ...

... i have a .wmv im watching streamed from an .asx playlist and id like to capture or save the stream as a 'downloaded' file that i can then keep on my HD to watch offline or burn to CD ...

... is this possible and if so how do i do it ???

(ive had a dig around in my temp folders but cant find anything that looks likely there) - do i need another app to capture the stream or can any of my streaming players (i have WM9 / WMP classic / itunes / winamp) do it themselves ???

thanks

I don't think you're suppose to be able to save streams. I think these systems generally don't save the entire file to disk, probably just the buffer (which is overwritten as the video streams.)

However I did use an app once to capture streaming audio so I could listen to it later. That was a year or two ago, I don't recall the name of it anymore. I'm sure something similar exists for video.

Now that the world's super powers are threatening to jail people for such things, perhaps such an application does not exist... and maybe I've never used such software in the past... Yes, that's it; I didn't post this either. I would never try to circumvent such a system for any reason... even if it meant I would otherwise have to stay up until 4AM to hear the song...

apologies if im hitting a grey legal area here (wouldnt reasonable private use cover this much like recording a TV program to watch later ??? ) but i did find this tool ...

... seems to work fine - records the stream to .wmv but with one little quirk - the resulting .wmv file wont let me fastforward through the file to get to the bit i want (which in all honesty was the main thing i wanted to be able to do since the stream i was interested in is an hour long)

oh well ...

I'm using StreamBox VCR 1.0 BETA 3.1 and it works great but some streams can be tricky to download if not impossible at all.

is it possible to edit down a .wmv into chunks without converting to .avi first ???

if so - what tool(s) do i need (my video knowledge is VERY basic at the moment) - i have some ulead thingy and a cut-down pinnacle editing app already (but never installed either yet)

Try Windows Movie Maker, if you right click on the imported video, it will create section, or at least it will on mpg's.
