I'm going to buy a new hard drive because. I'm running out of space. I now have two hard drives, a 60gb maxtor and a 40gb old ibm deskstar. I would get rid of the IBM drive, have the OS, temp files and downloaded files on the maxtor drive, then games, recorded files and samples on the new drive, which would be 200-300GB. How should I partition the new drive, and does this sound OK anyway?
What internal drive would you recommend?
If I choose and external drive instead, what should I buy? I own both a desktop and laptop computer so in a way it would make sense... but are they slower?

Also, what fans are effective and quiet?

I recomend you the Western Digital JB series. It's fast, quiet, it doesnt heat, and just a few broke (comparing to IBM or Maxtor). Is better to use 1 HDD for OS and software, and second one for samples.

Get the WD JB. Use an external USB/FireWire case for it. Very good solution

Note that IBM drives are now made by Hitachi. Also, Seagate is a great choice as well.

I have an Enermax case-fan, it's quiet, inexpensive and it works.
It has variable speed, too.

Hmm it seems like the store I buy from doesn't have the western JB:s, they have some WD Caviar models though.
The jb is fireware/usb? I'm leaning towards an internal solution. Which one should I have for audio and which one for OS ans software?
Also, what about partitions?

IDE or SATA depends on yur mother board. If it handles SATA, go for SATA.
The WD are not external drives, you have to buy an extra enclosure which can be FW and/or USB2 compatible.

BTW, JB, not Caviar.

what hard drive, what cooling fan?
