i would like to add an arpegiator upstream and a gate downstream of a pair of layered synths. what are my options ? do frooty or sonar have this capability built in ?

You can't arpegiate a layer directly in FL, so you'd have to arpegiate the layer's children individually.
Gating's no problem - I use a dummy synth to play the gate pattern - stick a peak controller over this and map the output of the peak controller to volume of the fx channel to which you have the layer routed.
