It's some kind of ancient sampling workstation.
One of my heros uses one (Jim Thirlwell aka Foetus aka Clint Ruin)
Any old timers out there ever used one?

Well i used a Mark I or II at Birmingham University in the 80s, think i was about 15 or 16. Can't remember much except how mad Page R was and how realistic i thought the cello sounded (oh, how naive i feel...). We made lots of Musique Concrete stuff

Jimmy Foetus has some fantastic sounding orchestral stuff (on the album "Nail") which has a huge but slighly artificial feel to it. Would that be stock Fairlight stuff or sampled in? Do you know what bit level and sampling level it worked at? I'm thinking 12 bit? There is a website. I'll have a look. Australian I think.

Well it was mono and it may have even been 8-bit on the first models
There is an urban myth (i've not had it confirmed anyway) that the character of the Fairlight comes from the A to D convertors which had incorrect resistors or something, so adding to the character of the end sound before it even reched the sampling stage. i've not heard of Foetus' stuff, will check it out.
BTW the Fairlight company are still going (not making samplers though) and use CreamWare plug-ins
in their studio systems.

http://www.foetus.org/
Please please give him a try. He's been described as "unlisenable" and it's not for the faint hearted. There's good stuff available for download off the site.
He would go to a junk yard and hit stuff with other stuff, record this and take it back to his fairlight for sequencing.
8 bit you say? Wow. Just listening to Feet now and the quality is ace.
Just checking the fairlight website. http://www.fairlightau.com They have new stuff! All my time on KvR and reading magazines I have never heard them mentioned.
Anybody else got any experiences?

Here is a good page with a description of the Fairlight and some samples you can download. When I think of the Fairlight I mainly think of Art of Noise, Pet Shop Boys, and of course Peter Gabriel (it's all over "Shock the Monkey").
