What brand of tape is better? I hear Access brand tape makes your vocals richer, warmer, and deeper without that ugly aliasing....vurt wrote:tape your mouth shut

Tell people that the Stone Roses are getting back together and you're practising to audition for the part of Ian Brown.
Hmm, monitoring problems? Some people like to monitor with effects on, but for some people it sends them way out. I like to monitor with one side of the headphones on and one off..makes em look like a c**t
but it seems to work for me.
Also, playing the backing too loud in the headphones if your're going for a big performance sometimes backfires, might be better to monitor more quietly.
Apart from that you could try the old practising...

you could take some lessons.
otherwise, you could adapt your style to your kind of singing and voice.
do you know serge gainsbourg? he made beautiful songs despite his awful (in a way) singing.
that's how i try to stand my own voice, anyway.

That bastard had a hit with a song that was basically him banging Jane Birkin. Why didn't I think of that?!Wopelka wrote:do you know serge gainsbourg? he made beautiful songs despite his awful (in a way) singing.

Another suggestion is to have the vocal melody playing on an instrument like a piano, guitar, or synth and sing along to that. This way all you have to do is sing the same notes you're hearing. Aside from that you may just be writing in keys unfriendly to your voice. If there's one particular note you can't for example it may help to just transpose the song down a step or two.
I'm sorry this post wasn't about techno.

The best way is just to get comfortable with your own voice.
For ages I was frustrated with my lack of vocal ability but then I kind of realized that I don't have to try and be Jeff f**king Buckley and can try and carve my own path.
I eventually got to a low droney talky kind of thing ala Lou Reed.
Still get annoyed at times but as a whole am a lot happier with the results.

And what about Tom Waits?! Sometimes a little bit off tune or gruff can off set the song nicely. Shit, look at Mick Jagger, decades and many albums later the old f**k still can't keep a tune!Wopelka wrote:you could take some lessons.
