OK...i'm gonna show my age here...but what is considered the best format these days for buying new albums/updating my ageing CD collection ?...I dont want to invest in more CD's as I think they are pretty much obsolete these days (so my teenage kids tell me) even though they are still my favorite format for my front room listening pleasure :) .
Thanks for any help.

I'm still buying CDs... Although when I buy from Amazon, there is often an "auto-rip" option to download the mp3 version, too, which means that I don't have to break the law to put them on my phone.

Ah yeah thats a good option....I am basically wanting the best way to setup my music collection on a cloud...is MP3 still fairly future proof or should I be looking at something like FLAC?.
But yeah...the Amazon option sounds like a good place to start...the CD and an autorip...many thanks.

Ah sorry...one more thing...what is the legality of ripping my own cd's to upload to a personal cloud?

I've kept my old CD collection , in the past I've ripped some CDs to Google Play Music , because I'm an Android user ... I found myself liking Google Music Stations for something different ... Recently I subscribed to Google Music for $9.99 a month ( it cut the commercials and ads out of the Google Music Stations ) as well as skips. there was a 90day free thing going on so I bit the bullet and have not deleted my subscription like I thought I would of after 90+ days .. It also gives me downloadable albums etc etc YouTube Red that cuts the commercials out . I like it alot ... Spotify , Apple Music , Amazon , etc etc are options too . I remember I used to buy more than 1 CD a month when I was between 16-23 years old so this is cheaper than a bad habit ... I'm 40+ now. .. Still no Netflix for me though.

I wouldn't worry about obsolescence of non-physical media formats  It's not hard to convert.

I buy CDs pretty rarely now, but occasionally pick up something on Bandcamp. Mostly I listen to Google Play Music.

I still prefer to buy CDs. I like having a physical object, liner notes, art... I've never enjoyed vinyl, and I don't understand the resurgence of it as anything other than nostalgia.

Of course I do put my most listened to music on my iPhone 4 (relegated to being an iPod).

You can't beat Spotify streaming for value. Bandcamp is best if you want to support the artist.

Physical media is a quaint relic of a bygone era like print newspapers.

Bandcamp is also best if you are looking for something different.

Azeri folk from Israel? https://kamakamila.bandcamp.com/
Black metal from Iran, with traditional instruments? https://akvan.bandcamp.com/
Flamenco from Australia, with Turkish lyrics? https://solquemia.bandcamp.com/album/limonera

There are a few artists, like The Legendary Pink Dots, Edward Ka-Spel and Brian Eno, that I always buy in CD and always upon release - mainly just to get them the royalties, no matter how small that might be. Probably misplaced loyalty I guess.

How much of the purchase price for a downloaded .mp3 (usually $1.29 per song on Amazon) would established artists get?

CD. That way you have a backup already. It's the quality I've grown up with and is satisfying enough. I rip to Apple Lossless.

I second this and add the following:
  • A physical CD in the shelf conveys a sense of ownership in a way digital doesn't.
  • CDs can be played more or less straight away without the additional hassle of vinyl and cassettes.
My solo projects:
Hekkräiser (experimental) | MFG38 (electronic/soundtrack) | The Santtu Pesonen Project (metal/prog)
