Next Propellerhead Reason upgrade to include VST support
https://www.gearnews.de/reason-vst-das- ... it-werden/

So far, there is exactly one way to use effects or plug-ins in Reason: You use the ones as Rack Extension (RE). These are mainly special effects developed for Reasons rack system, but with the disadvantage that only a few plug-in manufacturers use the interface. This could now be fundamentally changed or obsolete.
Reason is to get VST . To what extent and in what form, we unfortunately do not know. Only that it should happen quite soon. It is not a rumour generated in forums, but an information from a reliable source in the past.

EDIT: Confirmed

Yeah, just read about it on Reasontalk. And i have a strong feeling that it is true. What a news bomb. :D

Post

tbh I'd be more interested in great REs like Parsec becoming VSTs

Post

Before they include VST support, maybe they should have a sizeable rack.
Those VSTs are going to look massive beside the current rack size :D

If we are comparing racks...

Two years ago I didn't want this. The only thing I really care about is if I can exchange/sell RE's now.

I just woke up in the middle of night to a nightmare, then opened a net browser to see this... wow!
Just a quick question to all the other DAW users: Do you consider getting Reason after this leak?

No, not at all. Don't know which added value it would give me over Cubase or Studio One. I think it's mistake to go VST, the whole Reason architecture is made to make use of stuff like Combinators, routing possibilities, and tight device integration. TBH, no idea what they've been smoking over in PH HQ. Maybe the stuff Verdane brought over, when they purchased them. :P Anyway, i don't want to play the prophet, let's see how it turns out for them. 50-50 success, or total failure chance for me. Don't see much room for anything inbetween.

IMO, Reason has the best architecture and feel to it. When I tried out Cubase - I uninstalled it the same day.

I don't see a reason to buy Reason now. Even with VST support, I'm quite happy using Ableton Live/Bitwig Studio and eventually I'll be upgrading to ProTools for recording jobs.

Even with VST Support it lacks the clip-based composition I'm used to with Ableton and Bitwig.

At least now all the die-hard reason users can start using better plugins than what the RE devices have to offer.

Ha! Let's remember what Ernst Nathorst-Böös said about VSTs just three short years ago. It's funny how quickly he changed his tune when he got outside investors.

We looked at existing plug-in platforms and people were asking why we didn't have plug-ins in Reason. Plug-ins are a great prospect, but by our standards there are to many things about them that just don't work. To be blunt, it's old crappy technology. It's being patched up, but still. For starters, if the plug-in crashes, your document is in jeopardy. Automation and remote control are very complicated whereas in Reason they are all automatic. User interfaces are all different between products, which to newcomers is completely bewildering. I could go on.

Sorry, but there's literally about 4 people who would ever care if an "RE" gets made into a VST.

VST is so far ahead of Reason and RE it's not funny. RE's are a joke.

He's finally getting his ass handed to him and it's AWESOME to see happen!

Reason's a great program. I bought it at 7. But watching this guy eat his words is pretty sweet. They've had weird attitudes for years.

I don't care at all about VST support in Reason. That's not what I used to buy Reason for and I have Logic with 3rd-party AU plugins when I want 3rd-party extensions.

What will get me to buy a Reason upgrade is high-PPI support in the rack. The GUIs are too small and have been for ages now.

If they turn it into a "flat design" nightmare, though, when they finally do go high-PPI, I'll never buy Reason again.

This is going to generate revenues mostly from Reason Only users to get the ultimate toys from U-he, NI etc.
It's like adding a MUX to the racks...
