You don't allocate MIDI channels to VSTi's, you allocate Cubase tracks to a VSTi. The track uses the MIDI channel of your choice.

Are you using multiple vst's on diferent midi tracks but on the same channel?

Thanx for the replies guys but I think I should bore you with a step by step guide to my problem.
Open Cubase, drop down panels/vst instrs, press no vst inst, select(for example) mda epiano, click on (for example) midi track 7 (out)select mda epiano(V1), click on track 7 instrument, select mda epiano(V1),select track 7,click on set up instruments, check channel 7 is entered.(I always use the same channel and track number for live gigs).Select track 7 on Cubase. Select midi channel 7 on keyboard and expect mda epiano to play (it does). Select any other channel number on keyboard and it plays on them as well.Midi keyboard is working ok as I have checked it with B4 on standalone and it only works on the selected channels. Sorry to be so long winded, I hope this helps.

Try setting the Midi Track Channel number to ALL. This should pass though the midi channel as it is set on your midi keyboard.

Thanks for your post Rozzer. When I change the setup instruments page to all channels, as soon as I exit it goes back to the channel no. it was on before. Maybe I'm asking for something which can't be done. Sometimes I wish I was back to my old SQ80! Thanx to all who posted replies.
