SONAR Mac Prototype - FREE

It's not really Sonar for Mac, though, is it.
It's more like a bundle of Sonar for Windows and a WinE -ish wrapper thing.
Like saying "look, our plugin supports 64-bits" and then issuing a 32-bit plugin with a separate 64-bit wrapper.
Half-assing it, swot I call it. Taking the easy way out.
Didn't Image Line try the same with FL Studio? Did that go so well?
I guess not, or where is that Mac FL now.
Didn't Cakewalk brag that they re-coded Sonar from scratch a couple of times since v5 or v6?
So if they want to cut into the Mac market that badly, then why not just do it right one of those times.
Downloaded, installed, started for the first time, error message. I rest my case.
Shooting their own gift horse in the mouth.

Also, that was announced in April.
Cakewalk recently came clean about it and admitted it was a mistake to go this route and wouldnt be following it through due to the problems.

well they released something today. Kinda neat to check out Sonar on my mac but I have no plans to use a wine-based DAW as my main daw.

Well, apparently it was already downloadable and installable 2 months ago, link already in this post from April 19th.
If it makes it any easier, I missed it too.

It couldn't have been sarcasm or irony because then I couldn't shame you for being a Mac user. That's Windows users for you.1wob2many wrote:It's true because I want it to be true. That's Mac users for you.

What do they think at cakewalk? That they can fool the Mac users? A lame wine emulation! All that video teasing just was fake.
Really, I can install wine beta myself and run cubase even. Does it make the software made for Mac? Of course not. It will suck in usage and graphics performance, not be able to run Mac plug-ins (only wine installed win plug-ins). I also then simply can boot windows??
This fake Mac campaign by cakewalk / Roland is a shameless, annoying joke.
Codeweavers wine also always was outdated compared to recent wine. What a waste of time Roland Software on Mac is.

I think they tried to make something useful but probably they realised that it's no good

Well they are looking for an easy win. Fl studio did the same thing and claims that once Delphi is ported to mac they will finally port over. This was free so not complaining. Cakewalk has been hard core windows guys for a very long time and it's probably a significant effort to port to mac, I was skeptical the day they announced.
There are some advantages to using the code weavers thing, its quite possible sonar didn't run with wine out of the box so they had to pay codeweavers to help them resolve all the issues to make it work. Codeweavers also includes some low latency core audio drivers that aren't included in free wine, to get low latency audio with free wine you gotta use wineasio which is a turn off for some.
Anyway I wasn't planning to switch to sonar in general but it will be interesting to check it out and see how it works, but cakewalk has a long journey ahead if they want to win mac users over.
