Does anyone know the answer to the question being asked here:

Hmm ...

... since Halion does not create any MIDI-data MIDI-output
doesn't make sense.

Groove agent creates Midi-data, because internally
it plays midi-parts. Halion doesn't. So there is no
need for any MIDI-out in Halion.

Certainly Halion creates midi data. It even has midi export from the phrase player and drum machine.

It doesn't do it live. From the manual:

The phrases played by the FlexPhraser depend on the notes that are played and can therefore not be exported directly. However, it is possible to generate exportable phrases by recording the MIDI output of the FlexPhraser.

PROCEDURE
1. Click Record FlexPhraser MIDI Output.
The arrow in the Drag MIDI field starts blinking to indicate record mode.
2. Play some notes.
3. When you are done, click Record FlexPhraser MIDI Output again.
Recording stops. In the Drag MIDI field, the arrow remains lit to indicate that a MIDI phrase can be exported.
4. Click the Drag MIDI field and drag the phrase on a MIDI track in your host sequencer application.

Yeah I get that, but, that is talking about the phrases that are in Flex Phraser and that's not what I'm after. Of course the played notes depend on what's being played, but, clearly they are generated in real time as they play the internal zones in real time.

Kontakt allows this and because of scripting you would think that Steinberg would have thought about this being useful.

So, of course I tried before I posted this thread and nothing came out of Halion, so I'm assuming that it's not the case. I just know that with Kontakt you have to change a setting. In any case, sounds like it should be the subject of a feature request.

I posted it because it's the only reference to MIDI output I can find in the entire manual. Although the product clearly generates MIDI-like data in real time (who knows maybe the thing's wired up for OSC internally or just some proprietary command language to deal with MPE), they haven't provided anything that outputs MIDI in real time to the DAW or an IAC bus.

Also, the scripting only exposes MIDI file read and write objects from what I can tell. The reference is at developer.steinberg.help.

Yes, my reference to scripting was more general in that they intend for the scripting to be used, in part, to create midi player type objects so I'm surprised that they didn't think about this aspect.

Of course, I too looked at the manual and did some experiments, then hit the google to find the referenced post, before posting here.

I don't think that it does, but it should!

In any case, I'm, new to Halion so I'm just trying to suss out what it is useful for, for me, and what it isn't useful for. As I learn more about it any midi output seems unlikely as there is no way to turn it off or on in individual layers and the multitimbral nature could make output a mess without the ability to control what is an external generator and what isn't.

Midi recording and/or output of Lua script is a feature they should definitely add...
