As per this thread I just finished putting in my new motherboard, memory and cpu. Boots up fine, but just after the win2K menu, its giving me a blue screen for INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE. Since my hard drives were working just fine before my previous motherboard died, what should I look up. My IDE cables seem to be connected OK. I'll reset the jumpers before I boot up again, but I did try changing cables. Do I need to do anything with the BIOS to get my OS/boot disk recognized? The first time I built the computer, I had no problems getting the system up and running, but then I was doing a clean installation including OS.

Thanks

Are you booting off of the SATA by chance? Normally you see the 0x7B Stop error code when you're using a controller that needs drivers. What you need to do to correct that is press F6 when you see the FIRST blue screen on install, then it'll ask you if you want to install drivers for your disk controller. Once you do that, the problem should go away.

And yes, I've seen this a million times...

Did you re install the OS after you installed the new motherboard? if not that is probably your problem. It would be best to do a clean install with the new hardware.

XP plays pretty well when swapping hardware so drastically as the motherboard, and I believe Win2k should do pretty decently too, but never played as much with Win2k on desktops, just servers. NT, 95 and 98 didn't play so well though.

No SATA drives. Booting off my IDE drives.

I did not install the OS. Did not want to lose my original data. Too many files that I need to use.

I've never had much luck doing a mobo swap on Win2000 when trying to keep the O/S intact, for either server or desktop. Eventually I learned to just keep regular backups and do a full clean O/S install...less grief in general.

Ack! I hope you kept backups of everything critical on your HD, just to be safe?

I keep my data files on the same drive but in a seperate partition from my OS. That way I can reinstall the OS once a year or so without losing data...

Can you boot in safe mode? If so, do that and run the installer of the latest drivers for your new motherboard. (You may also need a bios update)

Also, which service pack are you running?

99.9% promise you that won't work either. That error is a driver issue for the disk controller. The driver is missing, and it won't load properly until he gets it in there right. You're better off reloading the OS.

Hmmm I was afraid that I might have to do that. My files are safe, but probably trying a reinstall will create some trouble, since unlike my Linux box, my OS is not on a different partition from my applications, and some other files, although all my music projects are on a separate drive.

Since I am in upgrade mode, I am thinking of getting a new SATA drive and installing WinXP on that. I should be able to see my original IDE drives after that. This time I will make sure I install on a separate partition.

Sound feasible?

It has worked for me a number of times, including on serial ATA drives on a PCI SATA controller where the drivers for the SATA controller weren't installed on the OS. I would at least put the chances of it working > 0.01% from my experience.

progfusion74, IMO, your OS and apps can be on the same partition, however, your data, (docs and song files etc.) should be on another partition or ideally another drive.

That is how it is set up right now. The only key files on my OS drive are pictures, although we tend to keep those on my wife's laptop, and my music library (not music I record, but ripped cd's and downloads from musicmatch, which I paid for). The SATA drive + XP is looking more likely by the minute.

No, it should be > 0.1% (my maths is not very good :bang: ) Thanks for pointing that out. :D

Has anyone had any issues with ordering the OEM version of WinXP. I was thinking of ordering that + a SATA internal HD.

Also any advantages to getting XP Pro vs XP Home. If you could enumerate that would be great. I presume XP Pro lacks some of the multimedia, etc capabilities of the home version, while having better security, multi-user environment features.
