So there I was, working on a new tune, playing my beloved ARP Omni II. The sound of those synthy strings awash in crap chorusing was exquisite. Pads so thick, you could almost swear a fog had settled in the studio. Wait a sec! That aint fog, it's smoke! And that smell! That is most assuredly the smell of twenty-five year old capacitors burning away! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Good bye, dear old friend and trusty companion. Good bye, my source of instant Jarre, T-Dream, Floyd and Joy Division. I have gone through hundreds of synths, but this one will be missed dearly.

Ah well, I take comfort in knowing that Cheeze Machine will never catch on fire...

Yeah, my Polaris is the same way. Many of the membrane switches have failed completely, and I can't switch shapes on one of the oscillators at all. It rarely works, but when it does, it sounds AMAZING. I have not ditched it entirely, but I have loaned it to an ex-bandmate indefintely.

The ARP was a great "instant atmosphere" machine. It had little in the way of control or tweakability going for it (though it wasn't without a pretty neat synth section), yet that may be one of its biggest assets. There wasn't much you could do but strap on some effects and get on with the song. This made it a perfect compliment to my big modular for those Tangerine Dream/Heldon improv sessions. When I was stuck for a chord progression, I could always reach for the ARP...and it never failed me. Aw man. This sucks. I will have to make an ARP OMNI in some modular something or other. I did sample the raw waveforms a while back...

Ah well. I will drown my sorrows in the rich sound of the Manley dual mono mic pre I just ordered...

Actually, you may be on to something. I have already made a pretty good ARP-ish string patch in VAZ, it can't be too hard to add the bass and synth sections...

Excellent articles, there...thanks! I certainly won't count it out entirely just yet. I have been able to repair quite a few old analogues in my day, and I will certainly not put this one out to pasture before cracking it open.

There's a fairly accurate Quadra imitation for Reaktor-maybe pull the strings out of that?
I had a Polaris myself-wish I still had one.The membrane switches that are going for me are on my Matrix-6
