so, i happened to get a late 2009 iMac from a relative, and i wanted to check out some audio software on it. As the Cubase installer is 11 GB, i rather installed Reaper. Now, i'm wondering, as Reaper obviously support both VST and AU, which should i choose for the plugins i want to install? I will also install Cubase Artist at some point, maybe Studio One 3 Pro too, so, i'm wondering which format i should choose. Would be great if someone could give me a heads up.
New to Mac - VST or AU? :P

If I should get my hands on a Mac, it would be Logic X I would be interested to check out

Well, Logic may be a bargain, but, considering that i already own the hosts i mentioned, and i purely want to check the world of Mac audio software, the step would be a bit steep.
Cubase should be good though, shouldn't it? Always read here that it's supposed to be good on Mac.

Just install both. I'm not sure how common it is today, but in the past many AUs were just VSTs in a wrapper (I think Symbiosis was a common one). It's probably more common for plug-ins to be built with JUCE these days and that will create plug-ins in all of the different formats.
In my experience, there is not much difference between using AU v. VST in hosts which support both.

I use vst when the host supports it and the plugin is avaible in this format.
I think Audio Unit have some technical limitations (I'm not sure an AU can output midi, while VST can), but most of all it's a matter of cross-platform compatibility of project files: if you use Logic, it's not a big deal because it's avaible only for Mac, but if you use Reaper or Studio One, you may want to be able to move your project across different platforms as smooth as possible, so VST is a wiser choice.
Cubase supports only vst 2/3 on Mac, so AU is out of question.
Of course, install both AU and VST, so the plugins are there when you need them in a specific format.

VSL finally gave in to the feature request and enabled VE Pro to use vst on the Mac side.
I think it was NI's Driver whose GUI failed as an AU in VE Pro 6 here, while the vst worked as expected. That's the first difference I ever noted as to functionality. Cubase loads only vst, so... but I've seen crash reports multiple times where the plugin crashing Cubase was called 'component' ie AU in it. I don't understand enough about coding to grasp that.

I just opened the "installer" of Spire and Antresol, and they both let you choose whether you want to install Mac VST or AU.
Anyway, i guess i'll just install both, thx for the tips.
As for the technical limitations, yeah, i remember something in the D16 manuals i translated about some limitations with MIDI learn in the AU. Doesn't seem to be possible, at least in the D16 plugins.

This entire forum is wading through predictions, opinions, barely formed thoughts, drama, and whining. If you don't enjoy that, why are you here?
