My Dad is interested in finger drumming, so I thought a cool Christmas present would be to get him a midi controller like the Akai MPD 218. I think the way he'd end up using it most though is if he could connect it to his phone (galaxy s8).
I don't know much about mobile music production. What kind of connector would I need between these devices and what kind of software on his phone would provide the best experience? It seems that apple does much better in this department and I'm not sure the best move on android.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!
Help my Dad connect a midi controller to an android device for Christmas!

You need an OTG converter for the phone to accept a (full size) USB-A connector (as that's the lead that'll come in the box):
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B015Z7XE0A - S8 is USB C, right? (This was the first in the list, no reason other than that I put it here.)
Then you'll need software for the phone. That's where it gets tricky. If he's interested enough in making music, something like Stagelight might be suitable. Otherwise, you're after a drum instrument app - for example Real Drum (I've not tried it).
I've used my USB-MIDI Keyboard with Stagelight on my Android 6 Moto G 2nd Gen and the latency was acceptable (just to prove it worked
). Samsung are meant to have "better than Android" response, so the S8 should be good.

Simular price (around $100) but less hassle to use is the MPX8. Just plug in some headphones and drum!

Hm thanks for the feedback! I'm thinking that the MPX8 might be the way to go, it sounds like it's super straightforward and easy to use... is there anything comparable to that with a 4x4 grid of pads?
