Anyone remember Steinberg's Sequel?

It had issues, primarily that it was a closed ecosystem plug-in wise, there was no export, and you could only move projects to one of Steinberg's pricier programs. But I always thought the interface was a model of efficiency. At the time, I thought for sure it was the model for new versions of Cubase, at least the less expensive versions. That obviously never happened. Okay, it is kind of--at a snail's pace.

I've also wondered just how popular it might have become had Steinberg not intentionally castrated it.

Note: I'm not recommending this as a DAW. Too many limitations. I only bring it up because of the interface.

Wow. They still sell it. LOL though... "Whats new?" I think it's about six years since they stopped development. If you're into GUIs, take a look at the trial and tell me what you think.

Yeah I completely forgot about it also until your post. You never hear about it anymore at all.

An Amazon reviewer had this to say:
They have a mini software application that loads to check a license and it stays loaded. It has to negotiate with a Steinberg server to verify the numbers which absolutely will not work the first time out. So far I've bought Sequel version 1 , 2 and now 3 with the exact same issues. I've had to reload Windows on my computers multiple times over the years I've been using Sequel and each time if I want to install their software again, it's a 4 hour ordeal with their tech support via email.

All told, the program is fun to use, but absolutely not worth the hassle they make you go through to use it. I would strongly suggest Mixcraft or Sony Acid as they do not use extremely outdated methods for piracy control.
It appears not to have VST2 or 64-bit support. If it weren't for these three issues (authorization hassles; no VST2 support; no 64-bit support), I might have installed it and given it a whirl.

Yes, it's severely limited and not viable for most users here. I'm NOT recommending it for use, only to take at look at the GUI and see what you think. Or perhaps not, as you might get upset like I did that Steinberg didn't follow through with it.

Magix Music Maker is a similar DAW (and also lacks 64-bit support). Air Music Technology's Ignite is another interesting DAW. I agree that Sequel looks more aesthetically pleasing than those others.

EDIT: Open Labs Stagelight is another DAW that does not get much attention here at KVR. I do own this DAW but have yet to create a full song with it. It also works the same on mobile devices.

Okay, look at and use the GUI. It wasn't just about looks, it was also about ease of use and focus. I like Stagelight's approach as well, but it doesn't even have a tempo track and Open Labs doesn't seem interested in adding such things, just making lots of money from newbies.

The authorization hassles are a big turn-off for me with regard to Sequel 3. I would hate to have to re-install Windows 10 because the authorization library screwed up something on my system (sometimes Windows Restore can save the day, but sometimes it cannot).

Switching gears again: I have an account at SoundBridge.io, and I re-downloaded the 64-bit installer for that DAW. I have yet to install it and actually experience the workflow, but it looks decent from the screenshots and YouTube videos I have seen.

Right now I am enjoying the workflow of Studio One 3, so while intrigued by other DAWs, to be honest, I would much prefer to take a break from auditioning other DAWs and instead focus my time and effort on getting back to creating music again (if I can). :phew:

What are you talking about? The eLicenser authorization does nothing to your system. Just install the latest eLicenser Control Center on top of the one that comes with Sequel.

I am glad to hear that installing the Steinberg eLicenser should not foul up my system. :phew:

However, it does run a non-terminating process in the background. I might have been willing to tolerate it on my PC had there not be lots of non-Microsoft processes running in the background already: an anti-malware/antivirus engine; the iLok authorization client for authorization of over 40 products (thanks a lot Audified, AIR Tech, UVI, SoundToys, Xils, etc. ); and the Waves cloud licenser. I would rather not install yet another authorization library that terminates and stays resident in memory. :scared:

It doesn't. Everything related to the eLicenser is only loaded when an application requires it, and is immediately closed when that application stops running.

Last version is from 2016. Just sayin'...

Hmm... reminds me of the Cakewalk Command Center authorization software.

Just about every DAW these days does the same thing, more or less. You can always uninstall it. 2016? Maybe a bug fix or dot upgrade. Sequel 3 has been out a lot longer than that.
