How stable is your daw? Do you wish you had a more solid daw?

Hello. I use FL Studio and find I crash the program a lot with third party plugins and I generally feel like it's a bit hard to keep organized and build big templates. Like for say orchestral arrangements, for some reason I think having 90 channels of instruments in my DAW would be a huge mess, I'm not sure how I'd organize. I have a lot of start up crashes and plugin errors, and drop outs and audio issues. I'm wondering if this is the same for most daws, I'm thinking of trying Cubase cause it seems the most stable, but I do love FL Studio it's so quick to compose in.
Anybody else use my daw? What about your daw?

If you love your DAW stick with it!! Your problems may be with your OS, file system, other programs open, or computer configuration (not enough cpu cores or RAM. Troubleshoot each problem specifically.

Daws like Cubase and also Studio One, are better suited to doing orchestral music, not that you can't make orchestral music in any daw...but...some daws are just better geared for it. Personally I switched to Studio One 2 / 3 for orchestral music production because of it's environment, streamlined workflow, relative low cost to own, it's own instrument and effect plugins, flexibility, overall stability, ease of use, tools, superior mixer flexibility, waveform editing and better performance than my previous daw. And that's with twice as many tracks you have mentioned on quite an old Intel Quadcore I7 920 machine at 3.56 Ghz.
Try Studio One 3.5.... there's no dongles required, but if you want something even deeper, Cubase...may be your bag / or not, depending on your needs.
Also worth noting, that in terms of track management, Studio One also has folders so you can drag your tracks into them, which is useful for keeping your tracks tidy. Opening and closing them can also expand and contract them in the mixer view.

What system are you using
I think you problem is with your system being powerful
(unless you are using shit ton of waves plugin. When i was using fl it tend to always crash when i used many waves plugins dont know why)
As far as orchestral stuff goes
In industry cubase, digital performer and reaper are used in general and these daw tend to be more oriented towards handling shit ton of midi and audio channels(reason being other daw throw the data live in cpu to be playback in audio but the above daws pre throw some part of the data and playback it acording to time so the cpu has some breathing room for processing thus it can handle way more tracks)
Cubase and reaper can handle 400 above midi and audio channel with ease can't say the same for fl

Actually I am using Waves plugins... I bought a lot durring holiday sales. I have a lot of rennaisance being used, some CLA, and some H verb, and a few specialty ones like abbey roads.
I usually am able to get pretty good performance with multiple kontakt instances, and I mostly do "real instrument music" but I am also partial to creating trance. I use a lot of different plugins, including a lot of free ones, sometimes the plugins forget their parameters or fail to load and sometimes it gets stuck loading on a plugin like (novation v-station) then crashes and I'm like ???, like it's never done it before but today when trying to reopen a project it kept crashing, then after holding esc, letting the project not load, then loading it again, it worked.
I have performance issues with a lot of mixer wave plugins. Arranging/composing is fine though for me I rather really like the piano roll, but the mixer and keeping track of things seems kind of confusing sometimes for me, unless I name everything (plugin insert window, playlist track, mixer track) and create "splits" in the mixer, and assign bus's etc which is all manualish work in FLS. I haven't attempted orchestra yet but I'm worried a big template would just crash it for me.
One of the issues I have a lot is the plugins start *crackling* the sound, and I found the fix is to go into "audio settings" and "uncheck, then recheck" "buffer overun safety" thing, it like it resets the audio device and makes it work again. If that doesn't work then it's the plugin causing it, and I have to go into it's wrapper and hit "process maximum buffer size" "check this for buggy plugin" etc and it usually fixes it.
Bouncing audio however is confusing compared to other daws, I usually don't bounce at all cause of that, and my projects get max cpu usage quick.
FWIW I'm currently having some kind of issue where all the sound on my computer is crackling and distorting when I open too many tabs, or other things. I've been trying to fix it but I have no idea what it could be, I use "onboard realtel HD audio" my specs at i7 4790, 16gb ram, SSD, and realtek HD audio. I had the same problems with FL Studio on my old laptop though, so I dont think the sound problem is an issue or anything, however I do wonder if getting an audio interface would help. I havent gotten one because I'm in an apartnet and the HD has been sufficient and I don't rekord anything lol

You probably should test some other DAWs too... Most of them offer at least month of demoing time so you have plenty of time to get familiar with them.
I'd recommend to try Reason, Reaper and Bitwig/Ableton.

This is most definitely not the case with all daws. I have found FL Studio to be the most unstable daw ever. You just have to use the auto save and live with it.kanoharuayu wrote:Hello. What's the setting of your audio in FL Studio? Can you take a snapshot of it and paste it here? I suspect the settings are the problem.
Also, if I were you, I would think of buying an audio interface first as its ASIO driver is usually better than Asio4All or FL STudio Asio.

Using: Cubase Pro 15, Bitwig 5, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49, Yamaha guitar(Pacifica 612v) and bass (BB234) and some virtual instruments and synths.

I found Studio One a total nightmare with some third party plugins... I've had untold problems with it. So much so I dumped it and went to Ableton.
So far it's been pretty rock solid. I've had a few minor crashes but its recovery system is brilliant.
The only reason I've actually kept S1 is because I've so many songs done with it.
As OP said try out a few demos!

I think Bitwig is the only DAW which has VST crash protection? I have Reaper, S1 and Ableton and they all crash.
I tried FL Studio once, and I shudder at the thought of trying to manage 80 tracks in it. I would try a demo of Cubase, Ableton, S1 and Pro Tools. Yes, PT is used in the film industry whether this board likes it or not ..
I like Ableton so much I would proably give it a go, especially if you are talking more on the electronic side of cinematic music. Although I 'hear' that Cubase has the deepest MIDI control and even Hans Zimmer uses it for composing
Or just buy a Mac and get Logic.

The onboard sound card could be your problem. Yes, an audio interface with proper ASIO drivers will make a difference.kanoharuayu wrote:

Onboard sound card/ASIO4all wrapper has worked okay for some users, but it's the exception not the rule.
Also, if you are using the same plugins in your songs, then it could come down to a buggy plugin. Waves and Kontakt should be fine (Make sure they are up to date). If you are creating large arrangements with Kontakt, you should learn how to use the multi-outs instead of running multiple instances which can push most systems to the edge.
