(Does this belong in samples/sampling?)

This is for any and all of you who use 'found sounds'...

I'd like to start recording outside a bit more, yet have no real idea where to start. I've heard of DAT's and minidisc recorders, but have no real knowledge of their functions...

I'd want (in broad terms), a portable box and a mic. Bulk recording time isn't a big issue as I'm after quick, unusual sounds, but recording quality is (depending on mic quality of course). If these sounds can then be dumped into my computer easily, I'd laugh, then dance, and then weep openly. Probably.

I've used my laptops built-in mic and several other techniques to mixed results, but I feel I'm wasting my time on a road many others have travelled successfully.

What equipment do you use, and how much did it cost to get the results you were after?
