Hi
I have used the demo of Orion Platinum5 now for some time, I tend to use it as a test bed for downloaded plugins.
I have heard people complain about Orions stability but must say I have very few problems with it - what are other peoples experiences, of its stability and overal usability.

I've generally had few problems with Orion, especially in these later versions. It's usually the first thing I open to test new stuff, it's so quick to set up.

If it works ok for you, what does it matter about other ppls probs? There are a group of anti OP ppl here who will slag it off till the cows come how, so this thread is totally pointless. (As would be a thread on any host)original flipper wrote:Hi

i only use orion platinum and i will admit to occassional(very rare)lock ups but these are mainly due to me pushing cpu limits too far
if you use it wisely no probs here

Hi
I really can't understand your point 'Kriminal' -What do you think my point is?
Funnily enough I posted this and took the dog for a walk - came back to find out some other poor bugger is having problems with retreiving his saved song's -which is something I had heard before - my point being I use the demo version and can't save - so how am I to test this feature?
That's why I posted the question - or should I buy the product and find out a year later that months of hard work is f**ked?
I am looking at various app's at the moment and have demo'd many of them but it is nice to get some feedback - I thought that was the purpose of the forum - yes I also sigh when the p4 v's Athlon thread comes up - but if it makes the poster 'FEEL GOOD' to get a diverse and confusing barage of feedback, well - its all good for him/her, no?
Flipper - thinking carefully about Orion!

Like any complex object, be it Orion, PC's, cars or people, they all have their quirks but there's usually a work around. . .
If you know what causes it to crash you can simply avoid doing whatever it is and if you simply cannot avoid doing whatever it is that gives you trouble then move on to something more compatible.
As was mentioned in the other Orion thread, it's probably best to save multiple copies of your songs to maximize your chances of reloading them later.
However, it's been a while since I've experienced a crash when loading old songs cos, as I mentioned, I've got a work around.
Orion isn't perfect by any means but its a darn sight better that any computer programm I've ever written (tic tac toe anyone!)
And it's infinitely better the shit I had to use in my hardware days (i.e. I never had the luxuary of a 64 track fully automatable digital mixing desk and a shed load of fx. . .)
It was the second soft studio I tried after Reason back in 2001. I never got the hang of Reason (I still haven't got a clue how to use it) but I took to Orion like the proverbial duck to a big pond covered in breadcrumbs. . .

FYI, recently, i have played every single track i ever made in Orion, in the newest version i have (a beta) and had over 100 crashes, just dissapeared off the screen! Same songs worked fine 30 secs later when i reloaded them.

I have mentioned in other threads some crashes with Orion Plat 5.2 (not so many with 5.5) but even if I like EnergyXT much and used it more often than Orion Plat recently I won't go saying it's crashing often (shame on me) as it might really be a prob with MY PC, even if problems do not happen with EnergyXT or some other hosts. (Must be so as others don't get these problems.) The advantages of Orion Plat are this obvious (as you seem to think too as you tested the demo?) and the synths and many effects are this great that now I'd rather go for a new PC in about a year than not to buy the next upgrade for Orion. Simply a good program. More and more I come to love the included soundfonts for sampler and so on, don't know if they are included in the demo (probably not as they're about 600MB or so) but if you don't know them you may find it fun having them. Think I've mentioned it but if you have the prog go, after some beer in the night before your PC and begin playing with the STARTING WINDMILL- preset
. I love it.

Hi
Good point - but if two or three dozen people posted saying they are getting regular crashes then we have an issue.
I know the question was not the best - I simply want to get some honest feedback - I use Logic 5.5 on a PC and sometimes it crashes like the clappers - for a variety of reasons - I would not recommend it to someone on PC - but I would and could explain (in detail)why.
I like Orion enough to go buy it - but money aside I don't really fancy 'losing' my compositions or having to save a tune in a variety of places and in a variety of ways - so I will pursue the question - perhaps elsewhere to get some idea of what issues to look out for.

I dont think i have ever lost any work in Orion. I back up very well, keep the same paths, use standar sample rate samples etc, just general good house keeping on the PC. Sometimes a plug causes a prob, but nothing major that cant be sorted. Its very stable here, has been for as long as i can recall.

have you ever had to format your hard drive and reinstall everything over again ?Kriminal wrote:I dont think i have ever lost any work in Orion. Not because of Orion, no. (and not at all on this machine)VitaminD wrote:have you ever had to format your hard drive and reinstall everything over again ?Kriminal wrote:I dont think i have ever lost any work in Orion. Make sure you keep a running track of exactly which versions of plugins you are using in your songs then.. especially DirectX pluggys.. Orion does some bizzare things if it doesnt have those plugins installed on a fresh drive
not saying its BAD.. but I'd keep a tally in a text file along with your backup sfs files so you know not only which plugins were used but the versions too. after I located 1.0 and installed it, the song loaded..
