Problems with Maudio USB DUO and Cubase SX

Computer specs:
Pentium 4 CPU @3.00 GHz 1.00 GB RAM DDRI
motherboard: ASUS p4p800 deluxe 800mhz fsb
Windows XPHome version 2002
Hardware:
M Audio Duo and pair Studiophile BX5
Recording platform: Cubase SX version 1.0.5.61 DEC.2, 2002


Having trouble installing the DUO as the ASIO driver in Cubase SX (Devices>Device Setup>VST Multitrack>Setup)

"M audio UBS Asio" appears in the list along with "ASIO Direct X Full Duplex Driver" and "ASIO multimedia driver" However when I select the Duo I get the message "EASI or MME must be used one at a time. Use System Tray to disable /enable MME interface."

A friend advised that I select the stock soundcard ( a Realtek AC'97) under "Sound play back and Sound recording Default" device (Control Panel> Sounds and Asio Device properties>Audio) to resolve any soundcard conflicts. Still no luck -- got the same message. I also disabled the stock soundcard but didn't work.

Even without the DUO selected as the ASIO driver, I can record digital audio but there are cracks and pops in the audio.

In the M Audio configuration manager I have selected MME mode, I have selected Channels 1-2IN, 1-2OUT , 44100 and 24 bits with Medium Latency under the M-Audio control panel.
I reads "Firmware 7.4ec USB Driver - , ASIO Driver - " under Versions. I
I can also record under ASIO/EASI mode but there is a delay in the playback compared to the wave form on screen.
