Hi

I have to buy/order a DVD drive tomorrow as Halion3 comes on DVD!
I figured I may as well get a burner - it will be a good way to archive my samples and synths as well.
Any particular recommendations or 'horrow' stories to steer clear of?
The new multi-layer NEC 2500a looks good value - I have heard that writing software needs to catch up with its potential but otherwise its a solid burner.

I am interested in this too. If anyone sees a blowout on a DVD burner that works well for them, please let me know.

I guess I should make sure its R/RW and -R/-RW.

I am in the US.

Pioneer are a favourd brand for for many folk

AFAIK Pioneer were the first to make DVD burners

The price for DVD RW's has really dropped....Great time to buy one....Plextor are pretty much regarded as the best in world and whilst you pay more you get your moneys worth....I recently ordered a Plextor 708 but was told they were discontinued and replaced by 712...the NECs are very impressive and I hear they are that good in price,quality and performance that they are rebadged(I believe the Nec can also burn 4X media at 8 X!)

When they told me the 708 was no longer available.I purchased the Liteon SOHW-832S which just came down in price quite a bit,it supports all formats... DVD+/-R 8x DVD+/-RW 4x DVD+R9 DL 2.4x Dual Layer 8.5gig for under £70 from most resellers.

It is practically silent with no annoying whine or resonance.It has also had excellent reviews.

Pletor have not introduced a Dual layer jobbie yet as far as I know and they probably will soon.

Although the Dual layer media is expensive and the Drives only burn at 2 speed or there abouts it's worth getting anyway since you can get your long movies on them.

I got mine for the above but more importantly for big time archiving of wav and drive imaging.....17 gig compressed by X2....for a few quid!

One thing to watch with the Dual layer burns is that not all DVD drives can read them....I hear that most existing drives should/will be able to but may require a firmware update so if this is important check that your other DVD Roms etc are firmware updateable,otherwise stick to 4.5 Gig burns.

A blank DVD-R has 4.7 GB free space but I think
you can only burn something like 4.4 GB of data to
it

TDK 8x8. I've had it for a while and its been great. It burns at 6x on good 4x media too.

If LG's DVD-burners are only half as good as my CDR(W)-burner they would be a good choise. They're obscenely affordable, too.
By the way, prices of dual-layer machines are dropping so you might want to consider one of those.

Pioneer. I bought a 107-D model for the Power Mac a few months ago (Pioneer's models are the SuperDrives built into most new Macs). It's worked beautifully for several CD and DVD burns I've made with it.

DVD burner recommendations?
