As much as this pains me to ask: does anyone have experience of buying/selling emagic stuff? Are they OK about registration transfers?

Yes they are... Contact them and give them the address and e-mail of the buyer! Shouldn't be a problem... If you're a registered user that is...

As long as you understand that the license explicitly says that it can not be transferred.

But in practice they do accomodate people; since their web page identifies you by email it's enough to give them name email of the new owner and the key # you're transferring.
