Hi,
I was using the Zone alarm firewall but was having trouble opening sites... a lot of them would not open, though repeated refreshes would help. on a hunch i tried a new firewall.. read bout it here..

Kerio

All sites opening fine now. What could have been the trouble ? and is kerio good.. seems a lot more complicated than zone... but i have started using it tonight.

I used to just use XP's built-in firewall, but then I configured my dsl modem to actually act like a router (something my ISP did not want to help me with, although they supplied the friggin thing :)). So now I don't have any firewalls on the pc's, otoh, my pc's are not accessible from outside the lan, except on the ports that I forward to them (for instance port 21 for ftp on this computer).

Hardware actually rocks for some things.

I use outpost ( http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/ )which is far the best windows fw i've seen. Of course, we're talking about personal protection but i guess works the same on gateway computers too. It uses some wizzards for apps to get connected, you have 3 security templates you can switch anytime, can handle plugins and other stuff i didn't care about :).
And they give a free version with less options but the same protection as pro version.

I have a 90 trial mcafee firewall with virus protection bundled with my new laptop. It seems to work good! Already caught and zapped a trojan and blocked two attempts to access my ports. It also allows me to trace the IP address back to who was trying to access my computer. I just might pay for a subscription when the trial is up!

another vote for outpost here. Light on system resources, great flexibility, smart interface.

Only quibble is that the free version doesn't work well with Novell, but pay up and it's fine (to do with trusted zones...)

Good price too.

Couple it with the most excellent free AntiVirus software AVAST and you're home free!

I bought Kerio with AVG and great duo.

You can get Kerio alone as well.

i figured the initial problem i was having.. nothing to do with sites...

kerio was working fine... just that is seems to hassel me too much...

outpost i tried... but the dammed thing just blocks everything.. wont even let my browser (firefix) access anything...

and i dont have the will to study firewalls right now..

so far i found Zone to be the easiest... but no one seems to have mentioned.. it.... also is the Built in fo\irewall (XP) any good ???

I didn't read your entire first post...

I'm using Kerio and Firefox.

We must have them set-up different...

I do have a problem with Kerio blocking windows up-date..

I'm using Kerio as well (free version). Its just a matter of making some basic rules for IE / FireFox and everything will be fine (just don't forget to activate the "create a rule for this communication and DON'T ASK ME AGAIN" when creating new rules). If Kerio is blocking windows update, check your settings in Kerio / System Security / Applications / application "Windows Update Manager for NT"; change (edit) the settings to "PERMIT" on "when this application is starting".

Maybe you guys can help me.

I have a 2 pc's at home, setup as a network. The main pc is connected to the internet.
I have tried using both Zone alarm and Kerio. Both seem to block the 2nd pc from getting on the internet. I have set trusted zone to low on Zone alarm, and ticked all the boxes under trusted on Kerio. No luck so far.

I'm using Zone Alarm for some months and never had a problem :o
Eventually something intelligent will appear written here. Watch this space.
