I finally got my new Dell Inspiron 8600 today, and wouldn't you know it - I ran into problems already!
I just installed Logic Audio Platinum 5.51, when I start the program it seems to be OK until the loadup screen gets to "initializing external sample editor" - then it freezes. Every time!
Any other die-hard Logic PC users run into this problem?
Help! :help:

I've come across it! Check your process list on the task manager...if you're running any external sampler progs (i.e wavelab, adobe audition, cool edit pro, etc.) or have done prior to opening Logic - you might try closing them first.

Also check the last thing you installed..maybe causing a conflict. Last thing to check is the plug-in enabler (Start Menu/emagic/tools). Sometimes, if you install a VST and a DX version of the same plugin, Logic files for divorce.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks for the reply.
Yeah, I've had plugin problems before with logic, but I can usually tell what plug is a problem by watching the load screen display what plug is being scanned at the freeze-point. I had no vst's installed when I posted the first message. I since tried installing a couple plugs to see if that would help - still, no dice. It seems that (maybe) Logic is mistaking something else in the computer as the "external sample editor".
Any other ideas?

Yes, I've had that happen before a couple of times, but IIRC, rebooting solved the problem.

Sounds like it could be a problem with your audio device drivers, or maybe even your MIDI interface. What sort of interfaces are you using?

also a list of other audio apps installed and of course graphics card
Doh! The details.....

Dell Inspiron 8600
1.5 GHz Pentium M
1 Gig Ram
Midiman Midisport 2x2
40 gig HD (5600 Rpm - gonna update that soon - long story)
64 meg Nvidia video card Geforce FX Go 5200
Using the internal sound card for now, no external sound card yet... The M-Audio Audiophile Firewire is in the mail as we speak.... Should get it mid next week.
Software I have installed is Sound Forge 6, Logic Audio Platinum 5.5, Waldorf Attack that's it so far... Oh... most current Directx (9 i think) , and ASIO4ALL...
Any clues guys????
Thanks

That kind of problem is usually caused by incompatible DirectX plug-ins. I believe Sound Forge installs quite a few DirectX plug-ins. Maybe one of them is causing the problem? Did you run the Plug-in enabler?

Post

run the plug-in enabler (you can get to it from the start menu)

if that don't work, delete your preferences (can't remember the file name, i just got a new mobo and i'm downloading sp4 right now). If you can't find your prefs file. i'll have logic installed within a couple of hours and i will tell u the name.

Let me know, i would hate to see any chocolate vampire musicians be left without their DAW :D

Hi Count,

Here's a tip for you. I'm don't think this is the problem...but it's certainly is a problem I ran into.

Using the excellent ASIO4ALL is a treat, but the driver requires sole access to you soundcard. Logic, by default, loads up any GM Midi Synth drivers that your soundcard has, which in turn load up the MME driver. This can stop ASIO4ALL from working. You can get ASIO4ALL to work correctly by disabling this midi driver. Here's the recipe...

Open the Win.ini file (in the root Windows folder). Scrolling down the file you should see a [Logic] header. Mine looked like this:

[Logic]
MidiOut_Microsoft_GS_Wavetable_SW_Synth=7

It also had a few more entries.

Simply change the number '7' to a '0' so it looks like this:

[Logic]
MidiOut_Microsoft_GS_Wavetable_SW_Synth=0

This disables the GM Midi synth and allows ASIO4ALL to work correctly

Now save the file and reboot. Start Logic, diable the PCAV driver and enable the ASIO4ALL driver (remember to email the author of the driver with effusive thanks!) and you're set.

Hope this works for you.

Thanks for the advice guys! Unfortunately logic is still not starting. :?

Kajiki, I went through that whole plugin enabler thing already - but i don't think a faulty plug is the problem. When I start logic, it freezes before the plugin scan portion of the startup. So i doubt it's a plug - even though I did try the plugin enabler, but it has no problems with my plugs. As I said before, it freezes at the "Initializing External Sample Editor Communication" part of the startup. So maybe Logic thinks something else in my lappy is the editor - I dunno....

Bigg John, Thanks for the empathy! Us chocolate vampires get a bum rap 'yknow... I'll look out for that prefs file - thanks. :D

KingLouie, I tried that fix you gave me but it made no difference... Thanks anways.... :)

So, any other ideas?

Thanks,

Is it trying to initialize ReWire? Are the various rewire.dll copies on your machine all the same? (do a search for rewire.dll on your C: drive)

I don't know squat about Logic, but I know of other software where this was a problem.

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Got Logic Working! :hyper:

I talked to my friend who runs Logic on a Mac Laptop and it turned out that he had the same problem. He told me that when you install Logic for the first time with the EXS key in the usb port it screws up the install and leaves some entries in the reg file that effect Logic every time it opens up (or something to that effect). Even if you unintsall and reinstall it a million times (which i did). So, with that in mind, I installed a fresh Copy of windows (minus all that Dell crap), updated windows. Then I installed Logic without the key plugged in, updated it, shut down the lappy, installed the key, rebooted - and - bingo!!! Logic works!!!!
Now the computer is much peppier without all that dell crap cloggin' up the system too.
Now I've got a new problem... ASIO4ALL seems to not work. :?
Maybe I'm not setting it up properly, never needed it before...
Any tips on making ASIO4ALL work with a Dell Inspiron 8600 Pentium M 1.5 Ghz with SigmaTel Audio sound card?
I get the "Hardware is malfuntioning (-999)" message in logic when i select an audio instrument track. I get no audio once an instrument is loaded. But I managed to get a Standalone of FM7 working. Wierd.

Anyways, Thanks again,
CF

Hey Count,

Did you run through my fix? This is exactly the problem (ASIO4ALL with GM Synth conflict) I was letting you know about. The reason that FM7 standalone works is because it doesn't start the MME driver like Logic does. Simply disable the GM Synth and you should be alright..give it a go and let me know.
