Probably this is well known but I noticed there are lots of free samples and loops in various formats (EXS, NN-XT, Kontakt, Halion, Battery, sf2 etc) at the German Keyboards magazine website
http://www1.keyboards.de
If you go to the current edition 08/04, you can step backwards through each edition and there is a "master" download page for each issue.
Samples start at about 03/04 and go back to early 2003.

Ok...
it looks like there's no direct link to the individual issues, so
1) go to http://www1.keyboards.de
2) Click on the graphic on the left menu bar that
says 08/04 (that's the current issue)
3) Look thru the page for the red "Download" tags
4) Grab what you wanna grab
5) Go to the bottom of the page where there is a drop down menu which now automatically points to the previous issue - click Go!
6) Repeat from step 3 :)
Let the K-v-R pigpile begin!

I feel really stupid having to ask for further directions, but I still can't find the samples. I open up the keyboards.de webpage, click on the current issue link and see those download signs - first one in 08/04 is in the keyboards section by the virus powercore test link. I click the link, but the only download I can see on the page I get is "virus features.pdf" which is clearly not a sample. Do I have to register to their forum to be able to see the samples or what?

Paulie - the 08/04 link takes you to the current issue. There's one web page for each issue with a couple of downloads on each (no samples at 08/04 though). At the very bottom of each page there's a drop-down menu which will take you to the *previous* issue - just work your way backwards until you get all the downloads you're interested in. The bulk of the samples start a few issues (ie. months) ago. Good luck!
