iLok looks to be optional now with Soundtoys

From the release notes for 5.3, Soundtoys are issuing activation codes with new purchases that can be used with or without iLok.

There doesn't appear to be a way to go iLok-less for existing customers. Unless support can arrange something.

Maybe the could arrange to revoke existing iLok licenses and replace them with activation keys?

That's what I was thinking. They can revoke licences no problem as that's how trade ins work when upgrading to the full bundle.
Just depends on if they can (re)issue new activation codes for existing purchases.

I’d rather just keep using the ilok dongle.

This is great news. I might become a Soundtoys customer at last.

That's great news really, I'm not looking for their instruments right now but is good to see developer companies offering better alternatives and no so intrusive copy protection schemes.

But....Isn't this just bypassing the ilok account? I suspect it still relies on pace/ilok software being installed on your computer. If that is the issue for some.

Excellent news and hopefully influences other developers to get over their stubborn obsession with iLok exclusivity.

Yep, seems to. Someone from Soundtoys said this in the V5 thread (I couldn't find it earlier and just created a new topic).zvenx wrote: Thu Nov 15, 2018 9:21 pm But....Isn't this just bypassing the ilok account? Apologies for refloating this old thread, has anyone revoked their Sountoys license and converted it to an activation code? The iLok license manager only has an option to redeem an activation code, but there is no way to... "un-redeem" or whatever they call the procedure. On the Sountoys site they recommend continuing to use iLok to manage our licenses because we get some benefits (e.g. running the plugins on up to two machines), however, I'm not sure I want that. I experienced huge trouble on my laptop with iLok because iLok bound my activations to my laptop's NIC. The problem was that I performed the activation in the studio whilst using my wired network connection, then I went away to work on something away from the studio where there was only Wi-Fi and iLok would see my system as a different machine and refused to let me used the plugins. Eventually I had to make do with other plugins that didn't require all of this. That was in 2019 and I basically stopped using Soundtoys plugins because this was a hassle. Now I want to give Soundtoys a second chance, hoping things have improved, but I'd rather not link my licenses to my system hardware because IMO it's a recipe for disaster. Should my machine fail or undergo significant hardware configuration changes (e.g. after a particular component fails), I would be unable to activate mi license on the new hardware configuration. From the Soundtoys website it seems there is a way to activate the plugins without the iLok License Manager, but I can't make sense of it. I have downloaded the Soundtoys installer, I uncheck the option at hte end so it doesn't install the iLok License Manager, but when I run the plugins in my DAW I get error messages telling me some iLok crap is missing, so is it or is it not needed? Hopefully someone here knows how the non-iLok solution works, and how to revoke a previously redeemed iLok activation.

iLok is NOT a ticking time bomb so stop spreading bunk. The rest of your whinging is fine as it's your opinion. One solution to your problem you are failing to recognize because of your erroneous bias is to use an iLok key - this way the licenses are off the machine and prevented from all the bugaboos you are so scared of. Just stop with the bunk.Scoox wrote: Fri Jan 13, 2023 8:07 pm [snip...] iLok is a ticking bomb and I'd rather not have to use it. [snip...]

Yep I think there has been some misunderstanding on my part. After re-reading the info on the Soundtoys website, the iLok License Manager is needed to activate the plugins, however it is possible to do it without an iLok account, that's why I was getting the error messages. Now, when I load an instance of a Soundtoys plugin it requests the activation code. I have not done it yet as I'm treading carefully but I suspect the way it works is I have to activate the product every time I want to use it on a different machine, this is logged on iLok servers and the previous machine gets deactivated. This way, as long as I have my activation code I don't need to use a dongle or a specific hardware configuration. Is this correct? If so, that's basically what I want.plexuss wrote: Fri Jan 13, 2023 8:16 pmiLok is NOT a ticking time bomb so stop spreading bunk. The rest of your whinging is fine as it's your opinion. Since June 2022, iLok.com accounts are no longer required to purchase and activate Soundtoys plug-ins. With our new system, all newly purchased Soundtoys products can be activated with an Activation Code and no iLok.com account. This now includes upgrade orders, EDU orders, and purchases made through a third-party dealer. We do still include the iLok software in the Soundtoys installer, since Activation Codes still use the iLok software for licensing. (Source: Soundtoys)
