Reason as a ROMpler?

Anyone using Reason as a ROMpler inside other hosts? I have been looking for a decent ROMpler for my laptop and wonder if I already have a good solution in Reason and SonicRefill. I don't really like composing in Reason but it may solve my low CPU low memory ROMpler needs. Is anyone else using Reason primarily as a collection of instruments rather than an integrated system? Any problems when moving the project to a different DAW and changing tracks from a Rewire source to VSTi’s at that stage?

All I need to be happy is one more VSTi.

Yes, I am. I use the sonic refill also.

What I do is rewire Reason then play parts using mostly the NNXT, Malstrom and Subtractor. The NN and Mal parts usually sound good enough to keep but sometimes I'll replace the Sub part with some nice sounding VA synth (Albino) if it needs to be fatter sounding. This is just sometimes though as I like the way the sub fits into a mix. Most of the good VA synths sound great but they sound soooo huge its hard to fit them in.

Currently, I do the same. I am using Live4 as my sequencing host and use the modules in Reason. The cool thing with Reason is that because all of those modules are inside of that single instance of Reason, you can use CV's to have modules control other modules. You can't do that with separate VSTi's. Its nice to have a Subtractors LFO controlling the amount of Distortion or Shift on a Scream4 that I am using on a completely different module.

Powerful stuff.

Yes,this is my primary use of Reason.I ReWire NNXT,ReDrum and Malstrom to Sonar and take it from there.I use Sonic Reality stuff and free soundfonts I find online.

I have also gotten good use out of the Hollow Sun vintage library and have been developing a ReFill based on it for my new soundware company Dangerous Bear Underground, due early next month.Check out two free ReFills based on those sounds at http://www.computermusiconline.com

These freebies and the master ReFill cd soon to follow are meant exactly for using NNXT as a rompler, with tons of presets of vintage synths and drum machines, original presets based on those samples,ReDrum kits and rns files with effects and modulation routings.

Other than my own stuff,I definately recommend Sonic Reality. They are my favorite sample company, next to my own,of course.Check out their new mega single instrument ReFills just announced at NAMM,collections of big piano samples, bass and some other stuff I don't remember a disc dedicated to each.

I use Reason as a ROMpler as well. I recently did that "CM Synthstation" for Computer Music 76 which was intended for that very purpose. Lots of waves sampled and then patches made from those waves in the NN-XT. I love that sampler.

Yeah, darn them for not making a VSTi version of it! In fact, I have Kontakt, but never use it when the option of NN-XT is available! :D

So quick to lay out splits, so nice on CPU. Only thing more I'd ask is a real mod matrix.

I like how you can just layer upon layer in the NNXT. It's flexible and fast for messing around with stuff. There are some drawbacks though sometimes. I am doing a SICK drum kit for a new line of "premium" refills coming out with M-Audio soon (I think it is safe to say this as they have supposedly announced it at this past NAMM). There is all kinds of alternating hits and dynamic layers going on with I-Map. The only thing missing was the ability for me to modulate pitch a little with velocity. A few modulation shortcomings that's all. No big deal. The efficiency on the processor is really great.

So, I use Reason (partially because I have 30 Sonic Refills for it) as a scratch pad for just getting some ideas down. If I had time to actually finish any music I would probably ReWire it into ProTools. But, I spend more time on sounds so YOU can do that instead.

Glad you guys like the Sonic Refill box. We'll be posting some new free refills on www.esoundz.com soon with a little taste of the other SR refill volumes.

can't really wait to hear these refills :o

i also use reason inside of cubase via rewire, redrum and nn-xt kick ass, but i hate the sound of the reason-synths(malstrom is ok but can't stand subtractor). you could use some decent vsti-synths(albino 2, minimoog, absynth 2, vanguard) along with reason. the sonic refill is great, one of the best refills out there. it's nice that all this new quality-refills are coming. in the past i converted some of my important akai-cds to use them with reason, because there aren't many good refills. zero-g and sonic reality offer the best ones imho. i love the scream-module and the rv7000-reverb in reason, both have their own character. and don't forget one thing, garbage in garbage out, you will need good samples.

Woah! They REALLY released the info! Okay. Cool. I wasn't sure if it was one of their "Namm Secrets" or if it was fully out in the open in PRs. Yeah, we did the first 10 volumes there, not the last one. They're really nice. So, 20 regular Sonic Refill titles and 10 Premium Refills. That's a lot of refills!

Propellerheads themselves really like our refills. They're going to flip when they hear the new ones. I think we've used more features of the NNXT than anyone (including them) has. Also, some people like that we do patches for the other modules in Reason too. There are a lot of Rex libraries but not a lot of libraries for the other modules.

Anyway, thanks for the link. If I wasn't so busy finishing the final touches on them I would have a moment to check on the status of the PRs! Shipping mid-August??? Uh oh. ;) :D

I used Reason for a long time, but I give up because Reason always sound bad, i think that is the synthsizers. I notice that isn't the nnxt and redrum that sound bad.
I'd like to know if i can use the nnxt with the EFFECTS of Reason rewired on Cubase for hi quality productions? :P
