I have a HP laptop (yes I admit it) with 3.2 Gz processor and 80 gig HD. 1 meg RAM.

I run a crap load of plugins and virtual instruments. Yes, it crashes all the time!

Question for any geek who knows:

Should I run all my plugins from my external hard drive through fire wire or should I get a laptop drive that turns at 7200 RPM or should I get the 7200 RPM AND run some or all of my virtual instruments from my external fire wire drive?

Does the fire wire drive slow the streaming of info down to the point where it is the same as streaming to the internal laptop drive at 4200 RPM?

Or maybe someone has a better idea.

Rotational speed affects how fast you can get to your data.

What plugins are you using?

I really don't think your HD speed will affect your plugins crashing, unless you're using samplers with disk streaming turned on. Even then it shouldn't affect it (although it could if there's a bug).

do you know why you're crashing? like, does xp generate an error report? an article in computer music dec '03 issue has some tips, one of which is to make sure your soundcard is not sharing an irq with your video card. correcting this fixed my crashes, which were always due to graphics device driver conflicts. i'm not a very good geek, tho, and don't even know or care what an irq is...i just cook-booked it out of the magazine and the problem dissappeared. maybe your problem is the same or similar. the article i read was called 'the x files'.

Yes I am. What about a slot card like (I think its called) ECHO. Secondly, what apps are you trying to run? I have an HP (they paid a fortune for the technology don't be ashamed) 900htz, 250ram; it ain't great but it does the job, say FLS and the CS-80V or impOSCar.

I am running cubase sx 2. I run about 14 virtual instruments at one time plus about that many plugins for EQ reverb and so forth. I use BFD, atmosphere Trilogy, The Grand and other big virtual instruments at one time along with the reverbs and other stuff. I know it is allot of plugins to be running at one time but it seems like my computer should handle it.

It runs along just fine then as I work on the music adding and deleting things the performance meter spikes. It goes from working fine to jamming the CPU.

I guess I just want to know if cahnging the hard disk from 4200 to 7200 will make a difference.

Windows can be a pig, especially on laptops. Visit this website for info on how to "tune" Windows XP.

YEs I think you are right.

Also I just spoke to a geek freind of mine and I discovered a big no no I had done. I have all my streaming audio data of my plugins on my internal drive. Apparently I need to have them on the external drive.

I am going to begin uninstalling all them now and reinstalling them. This will take me a few days probably. I'll let you know how it works.

Thank all you geeks so much. BTW, I am 98% cowboy and only 2% geek. And it i the 2% geek you have to worry about.
