Hey all,
Back when I used to work for a computer company, we would set up multi-monitor systems by simply sticking another video card in. This was Windows 2K, if I'm remembering right. No other configuration required, and no multi-head cards necessary.
I happened to inherit a free monitor, and I happened to have a spare ATI Mach64 lying around (PCI). My main card is a Radeon 7000 (AGP). They don't seem to like each other, or at least, I can't get a multi-monitor setup going. In Device Manager, I get the yellow ! over the Mach64, and switching to different slots doesn't help. The driver is current and good....
Is it just that systems don't want a mix of AGP and PCI? It could have been back in the day that we were only using 2 PCI cards.

The Radeon 7000 (also marketed as Radeon VE) supports regular CRT, S-Video, and DVI-I (flat-panel) according to THIS product info page, and is marketed as "Dual Display".
Is there an adapter that will let me use the DVI-I output with a regular CRT monitor?

What the hell?
I did a quick search for an adapter, and what I have on my video card is NOT this DVI-I thing. If you look at my card, there is the CRT, the S-Video, and what LOOKS to be an RCA connector for either Analog or Digital. This is it:
In the Display Settings page, it DOES show up as a dual-display card, with the second monitor simply not active.

Hi,
You can mix AGP and PCI, but it seems that your Mach64 card has problems. I have an AGP and PCI radeon running together. You can get a DVI-I to VGA adapter for about $5.

Cards with tvout (IE the rca/svideo plugs) generally claim dual display with the tvout being the second display. To be able to select them though you generally need to have the tvout lead plugged in. On my nvidia card if the svideo is not plugged in to the card then the option is not available. So that is how you might be able to get some semblence of dual display from your agp card.

Hrm. I don't want the crap resolution offered by a television, so I guess it's not "dual display" enough for my purposes. I'll either have to scrounge up a PCI card that's not a hassle, or just wait until I can afford an actual dual-head card.
Thanks for the replies, though! It's good to know it's not just a PCI/AGP thing, so if I DO happen to come across an orphaned card (I have friends that are kind of computer whores) I can give it a try.

Update--
Using a tip I saw on THIS FAQ (brought to my attention over at CM/FM), I changed my BIOS to initialize the Mach64 first.
It worked!
However, life is still not peachy--
1. As it turns out, the Mach64 is even less advanced than I remembered, and will only display 800X600 True Colour, OR 1024X768 in 256 colours at 60Hz. Ick.
SO... still not ideal. I WAS using a neat little program called MaxiVista with my laptop as a second display, but ever since getting a router, I haven't gotten it up and running again.
I hate being skint.
