Looping and comping in Traction 7 -problem

Hi, I am new to Tracktion so have started with version7. all has been simple to understand, I have been reading manual instructions, watching videos and finding my way around it all.....but then I came to trying to Comp a loop. I am meant to have a little + sign in the bottom right hand corner of a track clip that I am looping which enables me to see the multi layers of the loop. I record fine with all the layers sounding but then when I stop recording. I find that I have no means of seeing the layers as there should be this + sign which just isn't there on any track at all. Is there some mysterious tick box that I have failed to tick or untick? Please help, I have been tearing my hear out all morning....thanks in advance.
