anyone overclocking with asus a7n8x-x and athlon xp2500+

hi all,
I've just got a system consisting of an Asus A7N8X-X, Athlon XP2500+, and 1 Gb Crucial 3200 400MHz RAM.
As the board is capable of 400 MHz, I had assumed I could simply ramp up the CPU from 166MHz to 200MHz and have myself an instant XP3200, with no stability problems. However, when I set to 200 MHz, it starts crashing all over the place (it's rock solid obviously at 166MHz).
Anyone else using a comparable system, and if so what BIOS settings do they have? Also, I am using an old 32Mb 4xAGP graphics card - would that have anything to do with my problems?

Are you using very aggressive memory timings?
If so you may need to up your voltages SLOWLY 0.1v at a time, to a max of 1.8v core 1.6v chipset. 2.6v vdimm.

yep, I'd try to raise the vcore first, slowly till it's stable. depending on how good your heatsink is, you propably should not go above 1.75 Vcore.
Don't know how the weather is in your area, but I yesterday had to reduce my overclock from 2166 to 2089 mhz, and vcore from 1.825 to 1.75 'cause due to the summer heat, the machine got too hot and became unstable. Even though I got a pretty good Thermaltake heatsink and 4 case fans
That is an xp2400 on an abit nf7 btw.

I have the a7n8x-x. My cpu is native XP1700+ (11x133=1463Mhz) but works at 1826Mhz (11x166) without any heat problems. I used to keep it @ 2ghz but now in the summer i thought it might heat as i have no case cooler.The memory timings are default. Is the Barton-M model? I've read that mobile bartons are much better for OC. My advice is not to modify the vcore too much, these values i got with default vcore.

Because i paid $40 for the cpu and i have the performances of an $100 cpu. Now i'll upgrade for a $100 cpu and got the performance of an $230 cpuKriminal wrote:Why on earth do ppl overclock these days, can you not just get a faster CPU? its prob cheaper than a new pc if you f**k up

YEs, I use that exact combination a7n8x-x with Xp2500 athlon. The easiet overclock is to set it to 12.5 multiplier and it will boot as an XP2800. I'd leave everything else as is. You can go further but I started getting pops from audio cards. I have been running it this way for 1 year and it is very solid with Oasys card and UAD-1 installed. - Scott Harris

That said, the reason I choose to NOT overclock is that silence is more important to me than performance. I'll be damned if I'm going to put any more fans in my machine than is absolutely necessary.

i have the 2500 OC'd to 2 gig (on a MSI nforce 2 board, no clock multiplies option available, maye i need to update the BIOS ?). Simply upped the FSB speed in my BIOS to 180something. CAn take it to 2.1 withought any issues.. but given it the headroom. and i use cheap ram, heatsink thd PSU.
