i have it.
i love my 17inch powerbook.
it is perfect for me.

i do all my dev work on it.

i have a fast 3gigamahurtz pc for the VSTi needs.. but i work mostly with samples and max/msp lately.. so .. i am in heaven.

that would be good for at least 5 years for me.. wake me up when they invent this.. I'll be sleeping in the corner not holding my breath over this..

My dream laptop would be one with features not available. RME low latency integrated card with audio outputs, integrated midi keyboard under the touchpad. Doesn't have to be big. One two scales would be enough. 200 GB to load all the samples and large vsts(morphology, etc. For speakers, if bose could make some small monitors to put inside laptops, I would be very happy. CPU highest, about 2GB of memory, others features are not so important for me.

Hmm, an AMD64 option might be cool, although most of the AMD laptops seem not to fare that well in the benchmarks I've seen. In terms of Intel stuff, I'd much rather it was a 2GhZ Pentium M than a Pentium 4 personally, reportedly better performance with them than Pentium 4s, at least in laptops. Fewer denormalisation problems due to the better FPU design, as well as running cooler and drawing less power due to its lower clock speed (it does 1-2x more per clock cycle than the equivalent P4).

a laptop should be light amd 64s aint light, niether are the pentium 4 laptops.

I recently bought an IBM Thinkpad T42p, because most of the consumer model laptops are crap, especially the video and displays, plus I'm willing to pay more to be able to call and talk to someone in Atlanta (not Bangalore), who will send a tech out to fix it within a day or so, whatever city I'm in.

So far, I'm pretty happy with this model. The benchmarks I've run (Sonar3 test and other general benchmark utitilies) seem to easily put it in the same performance class as a 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 with some things seeming to be even faster in certain applications.

I'l admit, by the time I was done, it was about $5,000 after paying for extra ram and an upgrade to the warranty. But it has performed WAY better than I ever imagined, and the thing actually runs 5+ hours on batter...that's while being online with the WIFI running at 54Mbps and the display turned up fairly bright.

Here are the specs....
2GHz Pentium M (Dothan) w/2MB Level2 cache
400Mhz FSB
2GB PC2700 DDR memory
60GB / 7200rpm HD
Intel Centrino B/G Wireless Networking and
Gigabit Wired Ethernet
ATI Mobility FireGL T2 128MB Video
15" Flexview - 1600 x 1200 TFT Display

I'll let you know how well it works for music over the next few weeks..but I can already tell you that this thing kicks serious Photoshop ass.

Got me a P4 laptop, bought it to replace my desktop and on those terms its a great machine. On the negative size the noise levels are rather high and also the machine is large and less elegant than those with mobile processors, also you can forget about running it off the battery!
If I was to buy again I would definutely be looking at a Centrino and also getting a 7200rpm hard drive.
